i use gnome too, however there was a message on startup of google earth, which I didn't read the first time, but second. It says to upgrade the graphics(was it driver) to run 3D faster, there hsould be help on google regardign this. On my current system it is not usable, too slow.

I have one of the latest Acer laptop and I can't hear sound as nobody
cares to push latest driver (already available for F8, but not for F7)
and I can't use googleearth as my video driver are too new....shall I
have to have my old laptop repaired?? :-)

Here, on GoogleEarth 4.2, it's in View -> Atmosphere.
