It is a partition of its own, and must be FAT formatted.
"/boot/efi" doesn't have to be a separate mount.
If you use gummiboot and don't want to have two copies of vmlinuz and
initramfs on "/boot" and "/boot/efi", you can mount the ESP at
"/boot".
On my laptop:
# findmnt --output TARGET,SOURCE,FSTYPE /boot
TARGET SOURCE FSTYPE
/boot systemd-1 autofs
/boot /dev/sda1 vfat
