Hi! My Canon BJC-70 will not print yellow or any colour that requires yellow. It prints other colours, but none that contain yellow. I have tried everything, including compiling the latest GhostScript. Please help?

Stupid question, but does it pass the self test?

Does the BJC-70 have one? It's a pretty old printer.

Self Test
There are several printer self-tests all accessed the same way.
* Make sure the sheet feeder contains a stack of paper, and the * printer is turned on. * Press and hold the MENU button until the second beep. * The Word "FONT" disappears from the display and the number starts * blinking. * Press the CARTRIDGE button until the number you require appears - * see list below for what each number does. o 2. All modes pattern - this shows all the characters in various pitches and heights. o 3. Ripple pattern - this prints a staggered list of all the characters. o 4. Nozzle pattern - this prints a series of horizontal lines to make sure the nozzle is functioning correctly. o 6. Test Pattern - this prints a Canon BJ-30 Description. o 7. Font Pattern - this prints all characters in the available print styles and pitches in each control mode. * Press MENU to start the test.
I edited to avoid line-wrap, but there was no 5 in the original.

Sure does. I owned one of these a long time ago and the instructions were provided by a different list member.

Now this is very odd. I did the self test, and now it works. From the test AND from Linux.

Perhaps the nozzle was blocked and the self-test cleaned the heads?
Tim. */
Possibly, but then how come other printouts didn't unclog them? Plus, it shouldn't have been clogged in the first place, as it was a brand new printhead.

Probably, the yellow ink jet was just clogged, a common problem if you don't use your printer regularly, particularly if you live in a dry climate like I do (desert Southwest US). The manufacturer of my printer (Epson) recommended that I use the printer at least twice a week to keep the jets clear. It didn't help. The jets eventually became hopelessly clogged. I even considered building a humidity control cabinet to keep the printer in.
I switched to laser printers.

Sure it did. You use more ink, you buy more ink, they make more money... You have to wonder if that's the sole reason they give out that advice.

Just to chime in here...
It is the sole reason. Cleaning ink jet jets takes a lot of ink and they do count on this to sell more ink.
Excellent argument for Color Laser printers.
I used to get ink cartridges once every 30-45 days making for an expensive proposition. Since I purchased a laser it is every 3-4 months for toners, and I print every day.
Since the price of Color Lasers have gone down, way down, then the whole idea of color ink jet is obsolete!!!!

To be more specific: Epson had never heard or had any complaints of jets clogging to the point that a "normal" cleaning cycle (or two) wouldn't clear them. I talked directly with Epson's area sales rep who was a close business acquaintence. So, I trust him to be telling the truth. When I told him that I would go weeks without printing anything, he said that Epson's anti-clog inks required regular use through the jets to prevent clogging, and that I should just print a color page at least weekly--Yahoo's home page was good enough--to bring new ink into all the jets, but by then it was too late. The jets were hopelessly clogged.
I did find on the net a procedure (definitely NOT recommended by Epson) using Windex to clean extensively clogged jets, but it required disassembly to gain direct access to the printer head and its jets. Too much trouble, and by then I had already switched to a b&w laser printer.

The ink was brand new though!

But the printer jets weren't. They were as old as the printer. And some of that old ink dried and clogged a jet or two. I doesn't take much. The jets are very small.
But at least it's working properly now.

Did this just occur? Did you do any updates? Etc.?
Do this first: Do a printer self-test. (From the printer and not from the computer.) Should be a combination of buttons on the printer. If no yellow, you may be out of yellow or the jet is clogged. If yellow does print, then you may have a driver issue.

I don't think the BJC-70 has a self-test. Does it?

Most printer manufacturers provide windows drivers and apps for their printers. I think a windows driver would raise a flag about that so that the bjc printer icon on the task bar would raise a flag about it. Perhaps it would also have a self test that can be initiated via the bjc windows app.
