Hi,
The up2date icon on my task bar (system tray?) is telling me there are 6 updates to be had (0 ignored). But when I run the app it, after querying the servers, it tells me that my system is up2date (sorry couldn't resist). This has been going on for several weeks (if not months).
Any one know why? Or how to resolve this issue?
Thanks, Neil Derraugh

Double click on the alert icon and it will tell you what updates it sees that need to be applied. I had this very problem and the reason I was seeing it was because I had YUM repositories in yum.conf but not in rhn-sources so there was a conflict.
You can also run 'yum check-update' and that might also show you the updates you need.
HTH.

The tools yum and up2date are acting totally independent from each other.

That is an frequently discussed issue here on the list. Did you search the list for answers? That should be first before asking.
Anyway, which servers do you use with up2date and which updates are claimed to be pending (one single left mouse click in the RHN notification applet brings up a window with list of available update packages)?

Several reasons can cause the updates available on the notification and no updates found when running up2date. One reason is if you use yum and the repostories selected are not as up2date as the main repository or selected repositories within the config file. Another reason is that the mirror selection utility finds the fastest mirrors or just randomly selects mirrors. If it selects the fastest, this would be less congested because of the programs available are behind current, maybe a day or two behind. A reason could also be that the archetecture of programs that you installed are a different archetecture than the rpms you installed. This could happen if you compiled a program for your arcetecture and a newer version is now available. If you click on the panel icon, a screen should apear were you can see what programs are said to be available.
A feature of up2date that prevents downloading and installing the wrong archetecture rpm is that it will not select, download and install a different archetecture rpm, this prevents snafus with critical rpms that are i686 and different archs. If it did not have this care, things could get messy. The applet shows packages that might be newer than the one installed and comes in handy if you compile from src rpms. You can download the source, compile, then install the newer versions in your preferred arch type.
Also, if you want to ignore these hangng around packages appearing in the norification applet, you can move these programs to your ignore packages area on the screen that pops up when you click on the icon.
I hope this helps out a bit.
