Hi there, I have a running FC2 on a Intel 233mhz motherboard, I want to move it to an AMD-K6-2/500 motherboard but it will not boot.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this run on the AMD motherboard.
Thanks.

Not without knowing the specs of the motherboard. ARe you absolutely sure that this mb supports AMD chips? Look for it in the documentation, regardless of if the chip fits in the slot. If my alzheimers hadn't kicked in, I would remember for sure, but I think that AMD has to have an AMD type slot (i forget the numbers it been a while).
Once you get the hardware going, it is my understanding that, chip-wise, AMD is basically something that is seen as very similar to Intel by most operating systems. So it sounds like you have a hardware problem without knowing more specifics. Also try tomshardware.com or google for the right url, tom's will let you look up the parts for hardware compatibility.

Sounds about right to me. Rick, when you say you swapped motherboards, you do mean that you swapped the motherboard, the processor, AND the heatsink and fan for something the K6-2 supports?
How far through the boot does it get?
You did just take the hard drive from the old system and put it in the new one.
I'm guessing that there's some sort of hardware compatibility problem. Can you get either Tom's Root Boot (www.toms.net/rb) or Knoppix, and make sure that they boot?
What were the CPU and motherboard doing before you swapped them in, and have they been unused for any length of time?
James.

Can you configure the BIOS?
You should see the memory test and the opportunity to press 'del' to enter BIOS config....
If you can get to the BIOS setup, what devices are listed in the 'boot from' list.
Can you boot the #1 install CDROM disc (or rescue)?
If you cannot get to the BIOS setup it is not a Fedora problem.

It sounds as if the OP moved the HDD w/ the working install from one system to another perhaps? If so that could be part of the problem although Linux is said to deal with that far better than say XP does.

Have done this several times. As long as the motherboards have the equivalent processors moving the harddrive to a new system works well. About the only problem I have had is with an FC2 system where I had to manually modify the xorg.conf for the correct video card type. Other systems this worked without problem.
Scot are you saying that you have taken a working disk off of an Intel motherboard and put it on an AMD motherboard and had it work?

If his Intel MB has a Pentium II CPU, that's an i686, and the appropriate kernel code would have been installed. But the AMD K6-2 is an i586, I believe.

I've done a similar thing a few times with no problems,
Binaries from the main repositories are all i386, so unless you've been installing packages specially compiled for your system I doubt there'll be a problem there.
How far does it get when you try to boot it?

Almost, but not quite, true. If you look at the files on the first distribution CD, you'll notice that there are two sets of kernels, smp and not-smp. Each set has a 586 and a 686 version. The appropriate one will be installed.
If you have a Pentium II or higher, then the 686 version will be installed. If you then move that drive to a machine which only has the 586 instruction set, it's not going to work.
I installed the 586 kernel package from the CD's and got further into the boot, now it gets past the initrd portion and stops/hangs at the redhat nash portion.
I'm further along but not quite there yet.
Any more ideas?

I would use this command to find mis-matched types of RPMs i586/i686
rpm --queryformat=%{NAME}-%{ARCH} -qa
They might be glibc packages that don't match, for example.
Good luck!

After fooling around with the grub command line kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet and changing it to kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ it finally booted and stopped at the freeing XXX memory portion, then after a bit of searching on the net I loaded the 386 version of glibc and it finally booted all the way, still have other minor problems but at least it booted all the way.
Thanks to all that helped.
