So where does this library come from? It would appear that earlier versions of VirtualBox used libvpx.so.5 which was part of compat-libvpx5, there doesn't seem to be a compat-libvpx6 package

I don't have an F36 system I can check right now.
You can also do "dnf install /usr/lib64/libvpx.so.6".

Right, the 1.11 version in F36 is .so.7. Looks like you're out of luck with that. gnome-shell requires libvpx so you can't install the older version. You could try copying the .so.6 version from an F35 system or extract it from the rpm.
(Or better yet, use qemu/kvm instead...)
Who said I was a Gnome user? I'm an XFCE user.

It's a generally safe assumption. :-) In that case, you could try installing the F35 rpm and see what happens. It will make dnf unhappy for future updates though.

Try it again without the path.

On F35, that picks up the 32-bit package instead. That library isn't available on F36, there's a newer version there.

Hi.
I'm using VirtualBox-6.1.34-2.fc36.x86_64 from rpmfusion-free.
It works and uses /usr/lib64/libvpx.so.7.0.0 from the standard libvpx-1.11.0-1.fc36.x86_64 RPM.
