I have a some parts I would like to make into something usable, including 500 megs of DDR PC3200 400mHz 256MB RAM.
I don't have any exotic requirements, just a box for routine e-mail, MySql, etc.
Thanks.

Ufff please, no HTML, no huge letter...
I don't see why those products wouldn't run fedora...

ps I agree with Manuel, no reason why it wouldn't. I assume you've checked the manufacturer's web site for memory specs, is that right?

Yes, it appears to me the RAM I have is usable.
There are no specifics on the site you list but I guess the main unknown would be the "AMD Sempron 3400+ 2.0GHz" processor that ships with the board.
I just thought someone might have an opinion to offer.
Thanks.

A mainstream processor from AMD or Intel is rarely going to cause problems, the same goes for desktop RAM (unless faulty or wildly out of spec). What you want to look at is support for the controller chips on the motherboard: IDE & SATA controller, onboard graphics and sound if present, ethernet, usb etc.
In this case you want to check support for: Sound VIA VT1617A (support onboard sound controllers often depend on the board as well as the particular chip and can be somewhat difficult). Via K8M800 northbridge support for UniChrome video Via VT8237R southbridge SATA support, ethernet support
Depending on your needs you may also want to try and discover whether suspend and other power saving features are supported for this board (though I suspect the only way to find out will be to try it).

It won't cause any problems. Linux can use every CPU architectures that Windows can. However the reverse is not true.

I would go to at least 1 or 2 gig or ram as the cost of ram is quite low at this time. It is well worth it as it does make a difference to speed.

Yes, I am aware that more is better but I would start with what I have.
However I just called Tiger Direct and today the price is $10 higher, the sale was only good for one or two days. The difference is not significant but it's a matter of principle now.
A few weeks ago I needed a power supply, they had one on sale for $15 but there was no way I could buy it for that price? It cost me 30 plus shipping, a fair enough price but not what was advertised and the ad was effective when I ordered!
They seem to specialize in "come ons" and a lot of rebates!

I really dislike Tiger Direct. The missives from the Pres are particularly obnoxious. The rebate process is a huge pain - I bought a monitor once with a huge rebate - the forms we had to fill out were tortuous and used non-intuitive language. It took over an hour to go throught it all, and I had to get the bookeeper involved - 9 weeks later I got a message saying my rebate application had been rejected because it didn't meet their 'qualifications' - never again will I buy there. There's lots of other good stores out there -- when asked, I always suggest newegg or mwave these days -
I buy everything from newegg.com. Great service, great prices, great selection, great place....

agreed, but, mwave (mwave.com) is similar and has one really killer feature if you build a lot of custom computers from mobo up - go to their mobo pages, pick one, and you have drop downs that allow you to choose a processor that goes with your selection, ram that is right for your selection, and the option to have them test the bundle for $9 - the time saved on researching which processors will work, are available, etc, and the same with ram, make their system the easiest to use of all the internet stores - I build lots of computers and this is the only place I usually go now when that's what I need to do
That is slick as a button....I just went to the site. Thanks for the tip!

That is a real low price for that much work. They have to put in a cpu and RAM and a HD. It would take like 5 minutes to do all that. Longer if they had to unpack stuff. But sure be nice. Then I would have not had to send back my RAM. DDR2 IS not the same as DDR.

test bench mode - have a space where you have a drive, a P.S., a keyboard, a mouse, a few other things, a mobo, just scattered in an orderly exposed fashion, a complete, but totally exposed out of the case computer - unpack new stuff, unplug what you need, plug in the to-be-tested stuff, fire it up, you're done...I have a little approximation of the above in my shop at my job

There's lots of other good stores out there -- when asked, I always suggest newegg or mwave these days - I too was burned by the TigerDirect rebate bait tactics. I jumped at the chance to get a Viewsonic 20.5 inch flat panel display. When I submitted my rebate request I found out that I had to purchase a new desktop or laptop in order to qualify for the rebate. On top of that the Viewsonic's DVI didn't work. When I tried to get a replacement TigerDirect begged out of it stating I had to deal with the manufacturer. Viewsonic acknowledged my problem and issued me an RMA but when the replacement never arrived I called and found they didn't have stock any more. I had to send my new monitor, paying for shipping of course, to have the repair it. They estimated 10 working days after they received it. Unfortunately I'd already given away my previous monitor and couldn't be without a display for 3 weeks. Every time I revisited the issue Viewsonic claimed no inventory so I ended up using the standard VGA interface rather than the faster DVI. I had another bad experience with TigerDirect. I stay clear of TigerDirect.

So far I can't fault Tiger Direct for any faults to my 2nd computer. And as they told me a week ago they are a retail store. They have a 15 day send it back for full refund and then it's on the manufacturer to take care of problems.

I agree, I have 1G, and that was a great improvement over the previous machine, with the same amount of RAM as you have.

I disagree - it is far too small an amount - I went for 2GB when I bought this machine in 2003. Nowawdays you should be considering at least 8GB.
