java installation issues

trying to follow the installation directions at:

http://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2010/install-sun-oracle-java-jdk-jr...

and getting this, which isn't productive. Anyone have a better cheat sheet?

As has been pointed out, they're two entirely different things.  The
similarity in names is down to corporate-style bad behaviour of copying
names to jump on someone else's bandwagon.

Additionally, I'll point out that there are separate preferences to
enable/disable each of them in Firefox.  And you may have to look
through plug-ins set-ups regarding Java.

it's relevant but i am tired ot explain people that JavaScript
has nothing to do with Java after more than 10 years because
Google was invited to learn the absolute basics

The OP is complaining about a Java issue, but makes a comment about
Javascript, and you don't think that's relevant?

so the question in another form:
why do you not ask where is the plugin BEFORE you try to
install additionally crap outside the repos?

I have never had any luck with the rpm. 
I have uses the tarball for a while now. 




    1. Download the tarball. 
    2. move / copy the tarball to where you wish java to reside 
    3. untar/gzip the tarball 
    4. apply alternatives 


        1. alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jre1.7.0_13/bin/java 20000

        2. alternatives --install /usr/bin/javaws javaws /usr/java/jre1.7.0_13/bin/javaws
20000 
        3. alternatives --install /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 /usr/java/jre1.7.0_13/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 20000 
        4. /usr/sbin/alternatives --config java 
        5. /usr/sbin/alternatives --config javaws 
        6. /usr/sbin/alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so.x86_64
