I'm having problems with XF86. It will not let me run a resolution higher than 1024x768. I have a 19inch monitor so it is rather ugly. I have tried using different combination of drivers for both monitor or video card and nothing works. This system dual boots between redhat 9 and fedora and under redhat 9 I can run 1600x1200 no problem. I tried editing the XF86Config file by hand to give it the same settings as my redhat install but it still goes back to 1024x768. Anyone else have this problem or know of a resolution for it?

This is devoid of almost any useful information.. which graphics card are you using? What are the contents of your XFree86 log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)? What are the contents of your XF86Config file?
Its also usually a good idea to check the bug database, if this has already been reported a temporary workaround may be in there. Or you could provide additional information to make the debugging process go faster. ^,^

The usual reason for this is the values on these lines in the Monitor section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config:
HorizSync 31.5 - 150.0 VertRefresh 60.0 - 60.0
This is from my one which is driving an LCD panel, so I restricted the vertical refresh to 60Hz. The values in the HorizSync entry are in kHz and basically describe how fast your monitor can draw. The higher resolutions and refresh rates need faster drawing, if your Monitor description is telling X that it can't cope with that it won't let you select them.
Another important bit is this:
Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection
You need to make sure your desired modes are listed there (yours might be quite different, but the same basic layout). X has a ton of built-in common modes in the axb format that you can try, like "1280x1024" or "1600x1200" assuming your monitor can cope.
If this doesn't help much, why not post your /etc/X11/XF86Config?

This happens usually because the config for the monitor is not set correctly.
try redhat-configure-xfree86 - and choose more appropirate monitor setting. (for example 'hardware -> Monitor Type -> Generic CRT Display -> Monitor 1280x1024). Now you can change the resolution as well.

When you hand edited the XF86Config file, did you forget to migrate the HorizSync and VertRefresh values found in the Monitor Section?
I ended up running diff against the two files and did find a VertRefresh I missed....all is good now. I just wonder why in 9 it could set it up properly for me but in fedora it doesn't. Oh well it's all good now.
