What is the quick / easy way to find out which files in / to make the HD space full?

du -x / | sort -n

(last filename printed is the largest)

One program that is quite useful is ncdu. It provides a detailed listing of the
space
all files take up in the filesystem, and it lists them in order of space usage.

If you have a Gnome installed, you can use a GUI tool for this.

Applications -> System Tools -> Disk Usage Analyzer
