Touchpad is not working anymore

Hello All!

I've been playing with fedora a little bit and I just love it! I've have
the gnome GDM and the Cinnamon Desktop.
My Toshiba U945-S4140 is running Fedora 19 and Windows 7. Didn't like the
pre-installed Windows 8 and I just remove it.
They both were playing very well, until I've done two things:
1. Update a INF/Chipset deal on the Windows part.
2. Update the kernel on Fedora.

Since the first Update, the touchpad have stopped working.
The pointer is not being displayed and, if I connect an usb mouse I cannot
move it with the touchpad. (obviously, the usb mouse works perfectly).

Definitely is the first INF/chipset update on windows.
Now I cannot even move the touchpad on Fedora 19 installation.

I wonder if I can remove the chipset update...

So, windows inf/chipset have nothing to do with what now doens't work on
linux. My bad, I'm mixing stuffs.
I've been researching a bit and I found that maybe, I should update the
BIOS.
Supposedly, there's an option on the BIOS to activate/deactivate the
touchpad. I don't have that, only for the keyboard and the keyboard
backlight.

Also, I've found that using the function keys, Something like fn+f7 just
works and activates the touchpad. I don't have that, actualy I have those
functions keys directly.

I've done a `cat /dev/input/mouse0` and I get nothing when moving my finger
on the touchpad. compared to `cat /dev/input/mouse1` (which is the usb
mouse) it does returns some strange caracters.

So, I'm going to update the BIOS and then, I'll let you know guys what
happened.

If by INF you mean the info file on the Windows drive, that's only a
text file for how Windows will use the hardware.  If the Windows update
changed the firmware in the hardware, then that may well affect Fedora's
use of the hardware, too.  It depends on what it changed.

You can see if an updated Fedora kernel was the cause of your problem by
booting up using an older kernel.  Use the boot menu, and pick one.  By
default, Fedora keeps 2 or 3 kernels installed, for just this sort of
thing.  Don't remove old kernels when you install a new one, just to
save space, you create headaches for yourself.

I tend to keep 4 or 5 old kernels installed.  That lets me go back and
check on things I haven't noticed.

No, it's not the kernel.
I have three kernels: 3.6.5, 3.6.8. and 3.9.9
With the two firsts, the mouse worked very well.
I've made an update on 3.6.8 to 3.9.9 and then, booted to Windows on the
reboot part, installed the chipset update, then boot fedora.
Since that moment, my mouse stopped working for all the kernels (I've tried
all of them).

I thought you said touchpad?

Perhaps you should say *exactly* what that Windows update was, so
someone familiar with your hardware can say something.

But just a thought - is there a special disable touchpad hotkey on your
computer?  Perhaps it needs pressing to undisable it.  That update may
have changed a default behaviour.

No, what I've updated on Windows is the chipset. Which (supposedly) only
makes Windows to recognize parts of the hardware, like the LAN card, the
WiFi card and so forth.

Now, there is a special disable/enable touchpad hotkey. But it just doesn't
work.
I've tried that in my Fedora 19, in anaconda at fedora's 19 installation,
Linux Mint 15 live cd and ubuntu 12.10 live cd. In none of those sessions
my touchpad or the d/e touchpad hotkey works.
Then, as I said before, with an usb mouse the pointer shows up again and is
100% functionally. But still, I cannot move the pointer with the touchpad.

Is the touchpad even recognized?  what is the output of lsusb?

It looks to me like it's not being recognized.
At this point, I suggest that you try a Live CD of Fedora 19, and try the
lsusb command again.

And repeat this command again, too.  I don't quite understand this command.
It seems to have an unbalanced " character.  Please correct me if I am
wrong.

What I meant by exactly what you did, so someone else may be able to
help...  You need to let the list know what hardware you're using, and
what that update was (what's it actually called).

Are you doing a full shutdown, power off, then reboot, between swapping
operating systems?

Does plugging and unplugging the mouse make any difference.

On my laptop, Vista would automatically disable the touchpad if I
plugged in the mouse.  That was an optional setting.

I, kind of, wished that Fedora would give me the same choice, since my
touchpad is in an annoying place, and would forever get accidentally
triggered while I'm typing over the top of it.  I'd be typing away, and
whoosh, I'm no longer typing in the word processor, but the touchpad has
put the cursor into the menus, and my typing is activating hotkeys, or
is suddenly in the middle of another window, typing it it.  I had to
settle for setting it to always disable the touchpad.  Which, oddly
enough, isn't 100%.  From time to time, it springs back to life for a
few seconds.  Sodding thing!

I saw a similar issue while moving from F17 to F18 via fedup.
I solved it by removing and re-installing xorg-x11-drv-synaptics

of anything connected to the computer.
This is with my usb mouse connected, and obviosly it disappears when it's
disconnected.

No it does not work on windows, since I haven't updated keyboard driver. It
did worked on Windows 8, but I removed it to replace it with Win7 and
Fedora.
This is what I did:
1. Worked on  Fedora normally, while downloading some drivers for Win7.
2. Rebooted
3. Booted Windows 7
4. Installed the chipset/inf update first:

5. Reboot
6. Booted fedora, wanted to make some stuff but the touchpad stopped
working since then.
This is what I cannot do:
- The pointer is not on the screen, anywhere.
- Cannot left click, right click on any place (though the pointer just
doesn't show)
- If I connect an USB mouse, the pointer shows up and works 100% but I
cannot move the pointer with the touchpad (something I can do on other
computers with fedora as OS).

Carlos:
I just tried with a yum reinstall and it doesn't work.
