Mediacast to TV

[Patrick O'Callaghan]

I have a smart TV (Sony Bravia) and can use Android Cast Screen from my
phone or tablet to see content. Apparently it also works with the Apple
equivalent. Is there a way to do this from my F21 desktop?

Compared to, as you described Smart Linux in that Bravia, Samsung Smart Hub looks like the
king of the road. :)
It is sufficient to connect one of those mini Wi-Fi keyboards and open browser.

There are HDMI extenders, if you can not directly connect PC-HDMI to TV-HDMI.

Forgot to mention that there is one other option: Google Chromecast. My
son lent me his recently and it worked well from Chrome on Fedora (with
the appropriate add-on). And it's relatively cheap. However AFAIK it
uses a proprietary protocol not compatible with Miracast, so the dongle
is necessary.

DLNA is something completely different. I already have it working, but
of course it's no use when streaming from a non-local source, e.g. when
looking at a Web video.

I do not clearly understand Patrick's question.
Is Patrick asking if there is an app on Fedora that
will let him view his phone's media contents on his
fedora desktop?

What I do with my android is that when I connect my
phone to my fedora laptop via usb, I choose (on the phone)
to enable directory view of storage content).

Fedora sees that and automounts the available storage
on the phone.

Then I use smplayer to browse to the android directory
to select the media I want to view/hear and I play it.

    We require direct access to the wpa_supplicant interface. No network-manager
(including ConnMan, NetworkManager, wicd) provides a Wifi-P2P API so we implemented it
ourselves. We really want to drop this once network-managers start exposing such APIs.
    We use our own miracle-dhcp binary as DHCP client and server implementation. It's
copied from ConnMan as no existing DHCP server provides ad-hoc capabilities. Once sd-dns
gains DHCP-server support, we will immediately switch to it (which should happen during
2014) and drop our helper-binary.


Can folks from the NetworkManager team & systemd-networkd team answer regarding the
current status in this matter?

I have a pretty ancient Sony Bravia TV 40ex703 and it most certainly does support dina (I
use minidlna on fedora 21 only wireless LAN) you don't access it through the web
browser - but you should find your flan servers listed under music, photo, or video
sources

As I've explained several times, this is not the problem I'm trying to
solve. I already use DLNA on the TV to access minidlna on my desktop.

I had another look and now I remember what stopped me last time: there's

Of course, but the TV only has 2 HDMI inputs and they are both occupied.
I also have a splitter but it's not very reliable (i.e. it's supposed to
switch inputs automatically but sometimes doesn't).

Of course I've tried that. The Bravia shows a whole bunch of (mostly
useless) video providers, also Youtube, Netflix, Amazon etc. That's not
the point. If there's a provider they don't have an app for then the
only option is to use the clunky built-in browser. You also get to
authenticate by typing your password with a TV remote. Hours of fun.
There's also a barely functional Plex client running under an Opera app
in the TV (only works with the paid Plex subscription).

The alternative is to use XMBC on a dedicated PC. There are lots of
those around, but that means a) dropping another $100 or so, and b)
having another bit of hardware to plug in and maintain. Since I already
have an i7 16GB desktop with a fast Internet connection, I was hoping to
reduce the complexity rather than increase it.

I did have a brief try at it a while back. Seemed to be a lot of trouble
to set up and I don't think I got it working. I might take another look.

No, I'm asking how to view media from my Fedora desktop (e.g. vlc
playing a video) on my TV, without faffing around with cables. I can
already do this from Android using the Miracast standard which the TV
understands.
