The hits on F30 keep coming. I can't remember an install where I had so many things not work right.
Anyway.
I went through the standard Xfce printer setup and connected to my HP 8600 over port 9100. I have printed a number of items to this printer.
But I want to use the scanner, like I have set up on my old F28 system, so I have installed hplip-gui, xsane, and such and started hplip-gui.
It is telling me I have no HP printers installed.
I went through localhost:631 and installed the printer again. It now shows there as well.
HPlip-gui still not seeing the printer.
What might I be missing here?
thanks

Try using "hp-setup" to add the printer to cups. It probably has the wrong connection type for the HP tools to recognize it.

Thanks it worked this time. Probably when I did that via the setup printer dialog from hplip-gui, I mistype the fqdn (my printer is on a different subnet from my system).
step by step.
I discovered the very hard way (wasting a couple of frustrating hours) that it is virtually impossible to set up a newer HP printer without running hp-setup first.

That is about the only way, and when the s/w updates you sometimes have to do it again and again.

FWIW, I've always had great success if I've installed HP printers using the "hp-setup" utility.
Also, when it comes to network printers I have found it best to use "manual" as the discovery method as the auto doesn't always work.

Particularly when the printer is on a different subnet!
