I just got a used Lenovo x131e supposedly just missing its HDD.
Well I got plenty of HDD with old installs, not a problem.
Boot up (an old F35 disk) and no WiFi.
I check Bios and WiFi enabled. I put in a different WiFi card from another system.
No Wifi.
I boot off the F41 Xfce Live CD, no WiFi and NMCLI does not list WiFi.
Any diagnostic tools to try?
thanks

I don't have an x131e handy, but would check to see if there is an "airplane" mode that toggles WiFi and Bluetooth. Some machines have a dedicated tiny switch in an obscure location, and others have a special function key (like pressing Fn+F7 at the same time) to switch it on and off.

It is Fn+F5 on the Lenovo and that did not make any changes. I am going to have to play around with the Bios stuff and see what happens..

Update the firmware to the latest before spending time on the kernel, drivers and userspace configurations.
The BIOS/UEFI is just another buggy program that needs updating on occasion.

Good point. I *normally* do that on a system from ebay. Getting the latest right now.
1) Run `dmesg --level err, warn` Check for wireless related stuff
2) Some wi-fi drivers are in extra packages I usually install this combo: iwlwifi-mvm-firmware iwlwifi-dvm-firmware broadcom-wl

I usually install this combo: iwlwifi-mvm-firmware iwlwifi-dvm-firmware broadcom-wl
the drive I popped in is F35 and those firmware packages are not available.
But I installed the Broadcom-wl, rebooted and there is the wifi!
So on my way.
thanks for everyone's help!

"spying" on the thread! Would you mind detailing your process of updating the bios? (I know, I could look it up, but I'm curious, as I've never done a bios/update. Would be cool to have this data!
thanks

**NORMALLY** I go to Lenovo's support pages for bios updates, download the ISO image boot and update.
I have done this on x120e and x140e that I have.
But the one I downloaded for the x131e is NOT working!
I may have the bios update function currently locked. Will have to check.
Oh, and years past I have done this for HP notebooks. It IS scary. Do you REALLY want to update the bios firmware you are asked? Like really??? :)

And sometimes a factory-reset. A second-hand computer is a prime candidate for having badly-chosen settings.

The first step is "lspci". Look for entries that say wireless or wifi.

I am noting all these recommendations for the inevitable "next time"!
