If so I'd like to hear from you.
I will shortly be installing FC5 on my M70 which I have not been able to effectively use because of lack of Suspend.
I don't care if it is "to disk" or "to memory". As long as I can put the thing to sleep (with X running) and come back and have all the many things I had going on still going on, I'll be happy.
Thanks for your responses.

Have you checked http://tuxmobil.org/ or http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/? Is there a support page, official or otherwise, for Linux on Dell laptops?

Hi Charles, all.
Oh yes. There's lots of refs to the M70 in those pages. Few mention suspend. (It does not seem to be something that lots of people care about. For me it is crucial.)
The suspend problems for the M70 have a long, twisted, and painful history. There's even a fellow on the internet (works for Mozilla) who had, as of last November, planned to offer a bounty to anyone who got it working.

If it is fixed it would only be with kernels after 2.6.13---which is why most of the pages that mention it say it does not work; They were written before 2.6.13.
Like rumours of El Dorado, one hears of "solutions" using later kernels but when they are chased down they turn out to be vapour.
But I have not checked things out for 6 months or so, so I thought I'd ask here. Were someone tell me he has it working under FC5 I would be THRILLED.

I don't know if this will be of any help, but I have a Dell Precision *M60* running FC5 and as long as I use the open source nv display driver and *not* Nvidia's proprietary driver, I am able to suspend to memory.

I think I knew this back last time I was checking up on suspend (running Mandrake) in November. But I had forgotten. Anyway, there are some "issues" with the M70 that make it a different situation from the M60, but I don't remmeber the details.
But thanks for responding.

I have no recent experience with Dell, but do have a Compaq V2000 (Turion processor, ATI graphics, running X86_64 FC5). Software suspend using acpitool from extras worked well till the fedora kernel got to 2.6.17.*, and not since. I have confirmed that it works with the newest stock kernel, 2.6.17.11, so hopefully it may work again with the next Fedora kernel update. FC5 originally shipped with kernel 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5, which could suspend on my hardware. This may not be relevant to your hardware at all, but try to suspend before your first update, to eliminate regression in the kernel as an issue. (This will not work if you use a respin CD/DVD). You probably now this, but it may work better if you do a chvt before and after suspending, and you may need specific kernel options.

Thanks Hendrik for the information and suggestions. I'll try to suspend when I first install, after updating with everything new except the kernel.
What is a "respin" CD/DVD? New term for me.
I was unaware of the `chvt' command, though on my Year 2000 Dell Inspiron 5050 (on which suspend has always worked flawlessly via APM) I have always had to manually change to a root VT and turn off the network and PCMCIA adapter before issuing `apm --suspend' to prevent a hanging upon `resume'.
I just tried `chvt' on my FC5 desktop and there appears to be a bug: It takes almost 3 seconds to actually change to a VT, and when I come back to X, there are a jillion Commandline prompts in the terminal window in which I executed the command. It was as though my cat had sat down on the "enter" key.
also `chvt' only appears to work from the root account.
Anyway, I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

You may also need to update acpi scripts etc. as recommended for your hardware for suspend to work when you close the lid etc. In my case I use the acpitool package from extras for suspend to RAM. With this package a simple acpitool -s (as root) should suspend. I configure sudo with no password for this command.

It is an updated release of the distro which includes all patches up to the time of the release. One was released for FC5 by Fedora Unity (http://fedoraunity.org/) with all patches up to 18 August included. In this case it will ship with a 2.6.17 kernel, which does not resume on my hardware. (This test may make no difference on your hardware, but it did enable me to identify the kernel as the culprit in my case. Without it I would have been banging my head against the wall by now.) On my Compaq the noticeable change reported by dmesg on these kernels is
PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area at e0000000 is not e820 reserved PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
The same message is however still reported by the 2.6.17.11 stock kernel, which does resume properly again.

It does much the same on my hardware, but it is useful for automated suspend if your graphics card does not like being directly suspended.

You can configure sudo to allow the command to run with no password, which enables user level scripts to suspend.
