FC7: 1680x1050 screen resolution on thinkpad T61 with Intel 965GM X3100 video chipset.

Has anyone been able to get this working? All I get is a resolution of 1280 x
1024 or something like that, with no option for 1680x1050.

I have an Acer TM6465 which has an ATI X1300 video chipset. With the
vesa driver it was not possible to get 1680x1050 eiter. I think it is a
limitation of the vesa driver cause if you look in /var/log/X.log then
you will see a ton of resolutions but not 1680x1050.

Interesting, because Xubuntu 7.10 alpha does afford me that choice....I don't
think it is an issue with non-existence of the driver. Maybe someone else has a
solution?

On one of my systems I had to edit xorg.conf (in /etc/X11) to add a few
resolutions to the "modes" line.  The install of F7 didn't build
xorg.conf correctly at all and I had to fiddle with it.

I have a similar problem with a 1680x1050 lcd monitor and fc7.

I can set the physical screen to the correct size, but cannot see any solution for the
display size.

However, fwiw... I tried a spare disk and installed the most recent mandriva (spring
2007).  It recognised and setup the screen correctly.

So there is no hardware problem for me, and it seems there is no fundamental linux issue.
Just fedora fc7.

Its a shame to blight a good distro by giving non expert users such grief setting up a
simple thing as the display.

It seems now... that I was hasty..
Following the guidelines here and installing the nonfree nvidia driver (I've at least
got an Nvidia graphics card, so the Intel one may still be a problem)

Agreed! And I have the opensource intel.....which installed perfectly with
xubuntu. Wonder when it will work out of the box with fedora.....

btw, i filed a bug report: no one has assigned it yet, so this is really low
priority, looks like.

i filed it under 915resolution. anything else that would be more apt?

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm
yum -y install 915resolution

Then add to the bottom of /etc/rc

/usr/sbin/915resolution 3a 1680 1050 24

and reboot.

Note that it's generally a bad idea to modify a system file
like /etc/rc.  By doing so, you condemn yourself to fixing the file
every time an update comes out.  That can be a pain in the rear,
especially if you maintain multiple machines.

Better to use modify rc.local (for late start) or add a script
to /etc/sysconfig/modules (for early start).  Those are there precisely
to deal with customized startup actions and they won't break when
initscripts get updated.

Where'd you get the Intel opensource? I've been over to

and they have source but tell you to go to your 'neighborhood linux 
distro' for precompiled packages. I don't think there's one for Intel + 
FC6, is there?

I updated mine using the development (for f8) and it works...it will eventually
show up on F7 and perhaps FC6 unless they stop supporting it before then.

xorg-x11-drv-i810-2.1.1-3.fc8.i386.rpm 
     xorg-x11-drv-i810-devel-2.1.1-3.fc8.i386.rpm

under fedora/linux/development/i386/os/Packages on the various mirrors. 
Which did you use?

Oh, boy, this is WONDERFUL. It took a few reboots and tweaking to get it 
to work right. The native display won't recognize 16x10 but when I 
plugged my external widescreen in, it came up in 16x10 right away.

Unless you are compiling from source, you will not need devel
packages. They are normally the header files needed to link to the
associated libraries. I can not picture you needing the
xorg-x11-drv-i810-devel-2.1.1-3.fc8.i386.rpm package.

Off to try this... instead of preparing for having all the second grade 
parents over for a school year kick-off party tomorrow night. If it

915resolution version 0.5.3.  Also, I had to configure the color depth
to be 16bit.

That's the current release version that's available for F7.

That may be a function of the amount of ram that you have allocated to the
video system through your bios setup.  There are two or three other options
under the video setting in the bios that you may want to fiddle around with.
