Hi all,

Just had an inexplicable (to me) event occur.

Accidentally typed "ctrl-alt-l" which caused a logout from my runlevel 
5, but did NOT shut down the running processes.

I was left with 6 running VMs, a host (not a pun) of other processes and 
a login prompt.  Once authenticated the only thing that changed was that 
the login box disappeared.  (beginning to hate that blue background, 
reminds of somebody else's bsod)

I can ssh in from a remote but am hosed from the local console.  No 
tty's available.  No where to go, move along Lookie Lou.

I always wondered how to log out and leave everything running awaiting 
with bated breath my eventual return.  Now I know.  But just how do I 
get back in?

New one for me.  Anybody out there that has found their way to the 
center of the earth and managed to get out???

According to my XFCE config, <ctrl><alt>l is the XFCE session logout
and brings up the logout dialog box (restart, logout, shut down, etc.).
It doesn't just "log me out".

My guess is that the session is screwed up and it's not seeing which
desktop you'd like after logging in. You might try hitting ye ol'
"<alt><ctrl><backspace>" key combo to reset the X session
(does that
still work?)

desktop = kde 4.3.4

iirc, in this and previous versions, <ctrl+alt+l> brings up screen
saver. pressing any key or moving mouse produces 'screen locked'
pop up and prompt for user password. no selections as r.s. responds
about xfce.

so i would say that your de is responding correctly to <ctrl+alt+l>.

as to using <SysRq> as suggested by j.z, ihni, as i do not use a vm
on this box, but i do presume he knows what he is talking about. he
seems to have in many other cases. ;-)

valium, aka, diazepam, aka, benzodiazepine.

not good. besides calming, tends to have adverse effect of
causing forgetfulness. which may cause you to use <ctrl+alt+l>
again and forget to use <SysRq> to recover.

to calm nerves, i do recommend mmj or 2mg lorazepam. ((GBWG))

Thank you Joe Zeff and Rick Stevens.

Your responses took me down a path and am pretty sure that I used up a 
pair of glasses but that path opened up a whole new level of usability 
that I never knew was there.

Joe: magic sysrq key on my old Dell laptop turned it into a stand-alone 
with external everything (it faces the back wall where I don't have to 
look at it ;D

Rick: my X session was screwed up.  I can ctrl-alt-l to my heart's 
content and everybody can log in without killing anybody else's session 
or the virtuals (router, mail, db, web, ... (family happy now; me too :)
