Hi;
How to install FC6 without cdrom? my cdrom is no longer working...floppy works, bios too old to boot from usb flash; computer does have usb though;
I've been trying to setup a ftp or http install but I haven't got that working yet either...
Thanks, Ken Wolcott
You can try network boot with PXE. You will need following. NIC supporting PXE PXE server

My, that's a long subject line.

How about a small partition on the hard drive with the flash disk image on it? I've not tried it, though. Getting it there and making it bootable will be the trick. I'd use tomsrtbt. Don't forget to mark the partition as bootable.
Then an external DVD/CD drive or hard drive should do you. Your computer is probably old enough that its USB port is USB 1.x. If so, the installation will be slow.

Not too long ago someone posted a response to a way you could mount the dvd image and extract the installation kernel as a choice within grub. You put the vmlinuz and initrd.img from the install media and add an entry in grub to boot the installation.
I cannot find the posting from the archive but it should be there somewhere.
Maybe we need "super beagle" as a search engine for the fedora user list archives. :-)
I'll change the subject to get attention from the person that had the solution.

Copied from article on headless installs - assuming you have linux working you can boot from grub as follows.
Essentially, you boot the install via grub by copying the kernel from cd or dvd - for example:
[loop mount DVD or 1st CD like so] mkdir /mnt/tmp # mount -o loop /mnt/Name/linux/redhat/fc6/FC-6-i386-DVD.iso /mnt/tmp
[create a /boot/fc6 and copy what we need]
# mkdir /boot/fc6 # cd /boot/fc6 # cp /mnt/tmp/isolinux/vmlinuz fc6 . # cp /mnt/tmp/isolinux/initrd.img fc6 . # umount /mnt/tmp
Now create a grub install entry such this [copy the root xxx from your working current linux]
title Fedora Core 6 Install root xxx-fixme kernel /boot/fc6/vmlinuz initrd /boot/fc6/initrd.img
Then you can install from you hard disk (dvd or isos need to be in their own partition (not root), or via nfs, or http or ftp.
good luck.

Thanks Gene for the info. I could not locate it in the archives.

There's not much setting up involved with doing an http/ftp install. Just remember to write down the address of a near by fedora mirror ( http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html) and the path to the os directory before you start, ie.
http://redhat.secsup.org/fedora/core/6/i386/os/ (or whatever architecture you have).
What I like about this install method is I don't waste blank CDs and I don't have to monitor the install and swap CDs when prompted. I can start the process before going to bed, and it'll be done installing in the morning. I haven't burned an ISO since FC3.
Also, I really hate CDs and I can't wait for the world to move on from this technology.

Thanks, Ken Wolcott Here is a link to a way to install from the CD or DVD image files. http://www.askapache.com/2006/security/install-multiple-os-without-cds.html [1]
