Problem#3 with installing Fedora 7:
After the first boot setup screen, in which one defines a user, I got a message similar to this: The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0.
After clicking OK, I got the message again after a few minutes of a blank screen.
This is on a Dell Inspiron laptop, Duo Core Intel, 2GB RAM, ATI X1400 video.

I guess the first question is: what is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
The second question: what is at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

I do have a working xorg.conf from FC6 backed up on disk. How can I get to a prompt so that I can copy it to this F7 install?

Not sure that is the right idea... after all a lot has changed underneath a "working xorg.conf" from FC6.". The question is, what is the Driver line in the "Device" stanza. To get yourself going, try setting Driver "vesa" in there.

Just hit 'A' at the gurb boot prompt and add a '3' to the kernel commandline.
If things ever get really bad, insert your install CD and type
linux rescue

This should take you to a simple console. At which point you can login as root and make whatever changes you want to your xorg.conf.
When you are ready to try them out, just run
telinit 5
which will try and take you up to init level 5, which includes X - If it works great, if not, you can go back to the text console with the control-alt-F1 key combination, run
telinit 3
to go back to init level 3.

Oof, I'm getting all sorts of garbage while I type at the CLI in runlevel 3.
I'm very pressed to get this system back up, so I'm going to reinstall FC6 or some *buntu, and I'll play with F7 when I have access to a real web browser and can really google. Thanks, Andy, for all the help. I will tackle this later this week and report back.
