Using GUI:
Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.
Yet, I cd $HOME/.thunderbird/ and I see the directory of my profile there. I browse the directory, and all the files and dirs are there.
So, what has suddenly gone wrong?

It's a good point. I did find other people reporting the same problem, but the explanations for the problem were not only inadequate, but also not applicable, as there was no other process of TB running.

OK, at least we know that your directories and files aren't read only, so we cross that possibility off. And, I presume that you own them because I'd have expected you to mention it if you didn't. That's what I expected, but I didn't want us to spend days trying to work out what's wrong only to find that it was something easy like this. Good.

So, this is an older system where the owner does not wish to upgeade. So I thought I would try and install TB from a downloaded rpm:

cpio rename????? Since when did cpio fail to rename something?
$ rpm -q cpio cpio-2.11-28.fc20.x86_64
This has never been a problem I even re-installed cpio without any problems. but installing TB still fails with this error.
At the verge of giving up, but still willing to hear from others about this issue.
