I've got a problem booting kernel-2.6.18-1.2200.fc5
I'm using an eMachine T2240 system. CPU: CPU, CEL-2.2G/128K/F400,mPGA478,SL6RW CPEMIN100155 CPU Fan Type: Fan, H/SINK:117162CBL01,MPGA,P4P-2.4G,W/
(The above was collected from: http://parts.emachines.com/emachines/sys_lookup.asp )
When I boot the 18-1.2200 kernel the CPU cooling fan power off as the words, “Uncompressing Linux Kernel....Ok booting kernel.” appear on the screen.
Prior to this kernel I've had a problem where the fan will power off when the CPU heats up too much. That still occurs with kernel-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 and earlier. But now with kernel-2.6.18-1.2200.fc5 the fan powers off immediately at boot time.
Is there something I can do to correct this problem. I'm admittedly not particularly knowledgeable in this area.
Thank much for the help.
James.

In order to troubleshoot this - you'll first need to determine if this is or is not a hardware issue. Is the cpu shutting down because of overheating?
If not, which kernel can you use without problem? Then compare the boot up parameters - between the working and non-working kernels. Sometimes a kernel may fail to load a module. Often you'll find that some kernels will work better with your system than others. --------gary
I have the same problem with my acer laptop, it seems that the acpi support in 2.6 kernel is at the moment a bit buggy, if a programmer reads this list, it would be greatly appreciated, that this got fixed, laptops under linux are at least 10 degrees of celsius above a windows installation...
ive had this problem not only with my own acer, but with other laptops too... not all though, so i think its a problem with the definitions of acpi devices...
i have an acer tm 250 btw.
