Hello list,
I've tried to update my Fedora Core 2 partition to Fedora Core 4, but the update failed with the message: "Update ended abnormally".
After this message all deveices have been unmounted, to enable a stop of the computer. I am happy about the fact that I can still work with my PC, but I assume that was nothing else then great luck!!!
Because I really don't know why this update has failed, I want to know, where I can find more informations about the failed update. Does anyone know, where such a logfile is?
Regards
Alexander

Check if you have files in /root named upgrade.log and upgrade.log.syslog.
If you have, does the timestamp match the time of the upgrade? If so, check the contents of these files.

I've found such a file, but I don't think that its content is helpful. Anyway, here it is.
Can anyone explain from this, why the update has ended abnormally?
Regards
Alexander

Hm, apparently, it died without flushing the buffers.
I don't think you can get anything useful out of this logfile.
When the upgrade died, did you have the possibility of switching consoles with Alt-F1, Alt-F2, etc., and check for messages on the other consoles?

No, all devices have been umounted automatically :-(
Can I force the update process to bring out some more informations?

Did you try to switch consoles with Alt-Fx?

I've just tried an update again, and on the 5th console I've found a message, which might be a hint:
No volume groups found
On all other consoles there was no error message. The last message on another console was:
setting file_context_path to /etc/selinux/targeted/context/files
However, I cannot find a directory selinux in /etc.

I have one system that has the same behaviour. It refused to upgrade from FC2 to FC3 and from FC3 to FC4. The upgrade just stops, everything is unmounted and it restarts...that's it.
I finally gave up on trying to upgrade and did a clean install. That worked.
