Sane is implemented in FC4/x86_64 with one x86_64 frontend and two (i386 and x86_64) backends. I guess the i386 backends are there to interface to i386 only frontends and the x86_64 backends interface xsane and scanimage.
My problem with this approch is that I need to upgrade sane-backends to the latest level which I would normally do by compiling them according to the instructions found on the sane projects web pages. However, such compilations will only affect the i386 elements and therefore I'll not have the upgrade I thought. Does anybody know how I should compile the x86_64 version? The sane-project doesn't know and refer to the Fedora team packagers who apparently have done it all by themselves.
Would a decent circumvention be to erase the sane packages from the system and compile new ones to an i386 platform or will that not work?
Following applies a fix to the x86_64 version of sane-backends assuming it has been copied into the standard source:
- rpm -e --nodeps sane-backends-1.0.15-9.x86_64
- CFLAGS="-m64" ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc --libdir=/usr/lib64 --
prefix=/usr 3. make 4. make install

I have a external firewire drive formatted as ext3 under RH7.2. When I plug it in to my new FC4 machine it complains with the following:
FAT: Did not find valid FSINFO signature. Found signature1 0x00000000 signature2 0x00000000 (sector = 1) FAT: Filesystem panic (dev sdb1) invalid access to FAT (entry 0x00c0000f) File system has been set read-only
I have to manually mount it as ext3 and everything is fine. I have two other external firewire drives one formatted FAT32 and the other ext3 both of these are recognized correctly and automatically mounted. Here's the output from fdisk for the drive that isn't recognized:
Disk /dev/sdc: 203.9 GB, 203927060480 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24792 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 24792 199141708+ 83 Linux
Any ideas??

Uh huh, and this was a linux system that got kitted. Sitting on the next port of a 100baset switch being fed by the router.
Jim has collected all the stuff ( the logs weren't cleaned a bit, which helps a lot) and will tarball and fwd it to the requester who asked for it as soon as the re-install is done.

Well he was asking about the sober virus that is suppose to hit out there again January 5th. As far as I know that virus targets Windows systems only. :)

And my fingers didn't keep up with my mind above, I intended to say it was sitting on the next port of the switch, beside 2 other winduhs boxes. The wifey uses windows in her teaching too and the son has a laptop in his room too.

Yeah, the 5th should be interesting, if only from the screaming of all the oxes that get gored that day. From people who have this attitude that 'my box is safe, its never been bothered before has it?'

So are we going to see Firefox 1.5 released for FC4?

Please NEVER reply with the complete digest. I myself, as I'm sure a lot of others subscribe to the full mail format and the last thing we want is people who subscribe to the digest to post the whole digest to the list.
Secondly, you must NEVER use a reply to start a new topic or ask a new question. This is called Thread Hijacking, and although it seems you've done it by mistake, a lot of people get upset by it, including me.
A minor one - please do not top post. In your case you weren't really replying to anything, but always reply to people's post either in-post (where you reply to separate sections of a post inside the original post), or reply at the bottom of a post (so it remains chronological and easier to understand/follow).
Another minor one - look at the subject line. Does "fedora-list Digest, Vol 22, Issue 104" really explain to the rest of the list users what you are trying to do? I don't think so. I've taken the liberty of changing the subject to something more meaningful.
Now that you have learned how to post here let's get on with your question.
Where did you get it from and what format is it in? I need this info to give you more help.
I should also mention FC3 has been upgraded to FC4 for quite a while now. Most of the talk on this list relates to the latest version, so you may want to consider installing FC4 first.
