I use k3b with no problems.
Using xcdroast I believe you need to use growisofs first to create the
image. K3b does it on the fly.
I use k3b too, unable for monthes to have a working version of
XCDroast.... The trick with k3b is to not use the "icon menus" and drag
and drop: use only menus from menu-bar.

You cannot put 4.7GB data on a DVD. It actually holds about 4.3 - 4.4
GB of data.
You can burn up to 8.5 Gb with double layer DVD.
