Hi all, I'm having some trouble trying to record DVDs -RW and +RW. CDs get burned OK, but not DVDs. All this on a FC3 system.
Here's the info:
# uname -a Linux linus 2.6.12-1.1376_FC3 #1 Fri Aug 26 23:27:26 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
# dmesg | grep DVD hdc: SONY DVD RW DW-G120A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdd: 50X CD-ROM, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(66)
# dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/hdc * DVD±RW/-RAM format utility by appro@fy.chalmers.se, version 4.10. * 4.7GB DVD+RW media detected. * formatting /:-[ CLOSE SESSION failed with SK=5h/ASC=30h/ACQ=06h]: Wrong medium type
growisofs also gives me a "Wrong medium type". All this was done with an "Imation DVD+RW|4x".
I tried googleing the problem but didn't find anything that would help me with this problem.
Any ideas?

What do you get from:
dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/hdc
?

Do you have dvd+rw-tools installed? You need it to burn DVDs.
Anne
Sorry for making the thread wait, but I was upgradeing my system to FC6.

I can write normal CDs and DVD, but I can't use DVD that are re-writable because I can't format them.

I think your formatting software is broken!
I don't usually try to format DVD+RW media since it doesn't need to be formatted. DVD-RW needs to be formatted.
Have you tried K3B (the best DVD burning software for Linux)? It will do whatever formatting is required automagically.

John Wendel

Ahhhh. Are you sure? I think it's the oposite.

Well, it all started with k3b not formating my DVD+RW, and then I went to the command line.
BTW, did you know that when to tell k3b to format a DVD it executes dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/dvd?

Here is the problem.
According the media guide on digitalfaq.com, OPTODISC is "4th class media". They describe 4th class as "Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate".
you need to find a better supply of DVD media.

Also, after looking at the media guide, I am not certain if it is actually rewritable media in the first place. The drive does RW, but the media may not be RW.
Where did you get the media? What brand does it claim to be?

Pedantic: "No problems were noticed". That doesn't necessarily mean that all was well.

If we believe that FAQ site, Imation is selling discs made by someone else with not much regard for quality. I'm not too surprised, when we used their products in video production, their S-VHS tapes were crap, but their VHS tapes were the best we could find. I've come to think poorly of their quality control.
I've found Verbatim to the best the best, but remember that's what works well with my drives (Samsung and LG). You may find that something else works best with yours, whether that be just down to drive/disc compatibilities, or the overall quality of your drive. Also, some drives need firmware updates for newer media.

Most branded disks are made by one or two companies only. One brand may use more than one supplier, so their QC may vary, as well.

I agree that Verbatim are good. I've also found TDK to be reliable.
