Hi All,
I previously posted about a problem with a black screen with Fedora 2 after updating via yum. Unfortunately, on Knoppix, where I've been coming to you from, I've lost access to my mail app, hence starting a new thread. Following on from the posts by some that it may be related to my graphic card drivers, nVidia, I installed another card that I had here @ home, ATI Radeon 7500, but, I still get the same, a black screen and where it continually changes back and forth to a text based login, which disappears to quickly for me to actually login. I also went and did a yum update through the recovery cd process, but no luck there, either. Someone mentioned posting some ouput from certain files, but, as I can't access the previous mail, can't know what it was. Paul Howarth, I'n confident you were one who asked for such things. Would you be so kind as to tell me again what it was.? Cheers, and again, sorry for what may seem as a double posting of the same problem.
Mark Sargent.

Now that you've got a new card, you'll need to reconfigure X; did you do that? If not, boot to runlevel 3, log in as root and run:
# system-config-display --reconfig
Then, try starting X manually:
# startx >X.out 2>X.err
If it works, great; reboot and everything should be fine. If not, there should be some useful diagnostics in either the X.out and/or X.err files, which you can look at after rebooting again in runlevel 3.
Paul.

Hi All,
actually Paul, I went back to the old card, installed latest drivers, whilst following the README.txt from nVidia and now I get a large nVidia spalsh screen in place of the black screen...every other part of the original problem still exists. Bekow are the log/conf files. Cheers.

Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'
This is a big problem. X doesn't like to do anything without "fixed". It pines for it's little bitmap buddy.
Is xfs actually running on your machine? No xfs, no fixed, no X.
And did anyone else have their xfs start up script in /etc/init.d get toasted?

I should elaborate a little for those who might not know:
The
FontPath "unix/:7100"
line of the xorg.conf (or an XFree86.conf) is saying "please look here and expect to find a font server at the other end of this socket."
xfs, as well as being the name of a filesystem donated to Linux by sgi, is the "X Font Server". And unfortunate name collision. Fortunate smirks, though, one is a device driver, and the other a daemon.
If that line is the only Fontpath line you have, you are saying "I have no fonts of use locally, get them all from the socket. This is not unreasonable idea, since it makes your font management slightly easier, and you can have the daemon take care of all manner of silliness for you.
But the daemon must be running, or X gets grumpy.
If your xfs server is configure and ready to go, and your init.d script hasn't miraculously turned into a small pile of cream cheese 0 sized file, then you may start the daemon by issuing the command as root:
service xfs start
It should say something like:
Starting X Font Server: [OK]
If it doesn't you have other problems.
Say, does it strike anyone that I sound a little like English is my second language when I say things like "Fortunate smirks, though"...
Right. It's the brain wanting sleep. Good night Gracie.
And to those with X problems, I bid you ex-problems.

Hi All,
thanx guys, I'll check this out tomorrow night, after returning home from work. You guys are awesome. Cheers.

Hi All,
ok, but, I'm not getting a chance to sign in, at all, unless I've set telinit 3 at the end of the kernel argument. BTW, shouldn't xfs be starting by default at boot up.? Appreciate you giving me the info to steer me further ahead, just, well, I'm still kinda outa my depth, I guess. Sorry for being a pain, guys. Cheers.
Mark Sargent.

Is xfs running?
$ ps uax | grep xfs
If not, start it manually:
# service xfs start # ps uax | grep xfs
If it's still not running, you need to find out why
Check if xfs is set to start up at boot time
# chkconfig xfs --list
(the numbers refer to runlevels - it should be on for runlevels 2 to 5)
If not, make it so:
# chkconfig xfs on # chkconfig xfs --list
If it's running, you should be able to start X.

$ ps uax | grep xfs
Mark: Get into runlevel three with telinit like you know, use the things that Paul said to check out the condition of the xfs, and then to test whether X will start without extra hassle:
# startx
You won't get the spiffy graphical login screen, it'll just go straight in because, hey, you are already logged in.
If it works then, it'll work in runlevel 5, unless there is some problem with whatever display manager you are running. But we'll leave that for later.

Hi All,
well guys, xfs was started, and then when starting X Server from in level 3, I got the same errors, and the nVidia splash screen appeared where the X Server should, I guess. Anything else to try..? Cheers.
Mark Sargent.

What's the output of the following commands:
$ /usr/sbin/chkfontpath --list $ rpm -q fonts-xorg-base
On my machine, the "fixed" font is defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias to be an alias of "-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1". Do you have an entry for "fixed" in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias? Is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc listed as one of the directories in the output of "chkfontpath --list"?
Paul.

Cheers, Paul.

Hi All,
Paul, I honestly don't know why the time-zone is showing that, because, I can assure you, my PC time is correct, timezone and all. That's weird. Here is the output for the commands. Also, the rpm of fonts-xorg-base showed not installed, and yum said no such pkg exists when trying to install. Cheers.

Hi All,
Paul, I honestly don't know why the time-zone is showing that, because, I can assure you, my PC time is correct, timezone and all. That's weird.
Very wierd, because your mozilla-mail client is convinced you're in -0500 rather than +0900.
Here is the output for the commands. Also, the rpm of fonts-xorg-base showed not installed, and yum said no such pkg exists when trying to install. Cheers.
Ah yes, you're talking about an FC2 system, not an FC3 system. The equivalent package there should be: xorg-x11-base-fonts
Current directories in font path: 1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled 2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled 3: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled 4: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 5: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo 6: /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1 7: 8: /usr/share/fonts/ja/misc:unscaled 9: /usr/share/fonts/ja/misc 10: /usr/share/fonts/ja/TrueType
Try editing /etc/X11/fs/config and remove the blank entry in the font catalogue between /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1 and /usr/share/fonts/ja/misc:unscaled.
Try removing the fonts.dir file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc and then do "service xfs restart", which should regenerate a fresh copy of it.
Paul.

Hi All,
ok, Paul, will give those suggestions a shot. BTW, how is my time-zone now..? Think I fixed it, although, it didn't seem broken..lol..cheers.

Hi All,
after all those things, still the same result, Paul. Not looking good at all. May be time for a reinstall, albeit, FC3 this time. Anything before I do this..? Probably won't happen till the weekend, time permitting. Cheers.

Does "xlsfonts" produce a long list of fonts?
How about "xlsfonts -fn fixed"?
What does "/usr/sbin/chkfontpath --list" say now?
Paul.

Shouldn't do any harm, but I'd be surprised if that was the problem.
# chmod 644 /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/* should be enough, since that's where the problem font should be.
Paul.
Unclear that it would do much. X and xfs are run by root, they should have full privs.
I'd be interested to see what xfs had to say when it started up. You might take a look in /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/messages for lines from xfs.

as requested, lines from both logs, Cheers.

Unclear that it would do much. X and xfs are run by root, they should have full privs.
I'd be interested to see what xfs had to say when it started up. You might take a look in /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/messages for lines from xfs.
Hi All,
as requested, lines from both logs, Cheers.

That looks suspicious.
Try booting single user and doing:
# cd /tmp; rm -rf .font* .X*
Paul.
Maybe before you blow away these files, we should look at their permissions?
cd /tmp; ls -l .font* .X*

Hi All,
okay, the netsat gave nothing. The permissions are as follows,
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 51 Feb 15 01:23 .fonts.cache-1 -rw------- 1 root root 0 Mar 2 00:26 .Xauthority -rw------- 1 root root 1126 Aug 24 1995 .Xresources
P.S. When doing the cd /tmp; ls -l .font* .X* I tried with > filepath at the end, but kept getting a dir doesn't exist message...how can I do that so that it writes to a file, so I can open/view/copy/paste from within Knoppix3.7.? Cheers.

Is this definitely the FC2 /tmp and not the knoppix /tmp?
What's the permissions on the FC2 /tmp itself?
$ ls -ld /tmp

That should have worked; what was the filepath?
Paul.

Hi All,
sorry, forgot to touch/create the file before writing to it..lol...yes, definitely the FC2 /tmp permissions..why..? something not right..? hacksaw, what were you looking for with the netstat..? Shall I go ahead and blow away those files now, guys..? Cheers.

You should never have to do this. The > should create the file if it doesn't exist.
This is what one expects for tmp permissions and ownership:
drwxrwxrwt 20 root root 32768 Mar 2 08:44 tmp
If it doesn't look like this, run
chmod 1777 /tmp
The 1 at the beginning corresponds to the 't' at the end. This is the "sticky" bit. On a directory it tells the system to allow anyone to create files here, but don't allow people to modify files they don't own.

Is this definitely the FC2 /tmp and not the knoppix /tmp?
What's the permissions on the FC2 /tmp itself?
$ ls -ld /tmp
P.S. When doing the cd /tmp; ls -l .font* .X* I tried with > filepath at the end, but kept getting a dir doesn't exist message...how can I do that so that it writes to a file, so I can open/view/copy/paste from within Knoppix3.7.? Cheers.

Hi All,
ok, but, I'm not getting a chance to sign in, at all, unless I've set telinit 3 at the end of the kernel argument. BTW, shouldn't xfs be starting by default at boot up.? Appreciate you giving me the info to steer me further ahead, just, well, I'm still kinda outa my depth, I guess. Sorry for being a pain, guys. Cheers.

Mark, have you tried this: go into the directories /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/* and chmod 644 all the font* files.
In tcsh (sorry, don't know bash too well at the moment):
cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts foreach d (*) chmod 644 $d/font* end
That worked for me when I had the same problem. It seems that one of the fonts.dir files is not by default world readable and so cannot be read by the X server. I don't know why this should be the case though!
cheers, ian

or of course, you could just do
chmod 644 /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/*/font*
(dunno what i was thinking there!)
