Hi,
I bought a new DSL modem on ebay last week. Everything works fine, except that I can no longer do a yum update or connect using gaim. In particular, gaim hangs while authenticating while gaim provides the following:
# yum update Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: core failure: repodata/repomd.xml from core: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from core: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
I somehow believe that this is some setting on the modem which needs to be correctly set, since another machine connected on a different T1-line seems to do just fine connecting.
Btw, the DSL modem has a firewall, set at NAT (Network Address Translation only) and I can do almost everything else just fine.
Can someone please help or suggest what I should look at?
Many thanks and best wishes, Globe

I think a lot repo's are suddenly fucked up or the last YUM is bugged out. My day starts at the moment with:
yum clean headers yum update
On all the linux machines i do work on.
They all do : ############### //var/cache/yum/dag/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty
^ //var/cache/yum/dag/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found
^ Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: dag Error importing repomd.xml from dag: Error: could not parse file //var/cache/yum/dag/repomd.xml Setting up Install Process Setting up Repos //var/cache/yum/dag/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty

So whats going on!?
Danny
Hi,
Yes, this may be a problem sometimes, but the fact remains that there is another machine on a T1-line which is connecting just fine at least at times. Above all everything was fine till last week when I switched modems.
This one does not connect to yum or to Yahoo!, MSN, or AIM using gaim. Is there some setting I have wrong.
Can someone please tell me where to look?
Many thanks and best wishes, GT:-)

For the past two weeks, I have been unable to get a single yum update as well as connect using gaim. I wonder if anyone can please help. I have a new modem, but I am able to do everything else.
Any advice suggestions, etc would be really appreciated. Here is what I get using yum:
# yum update Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: core failure: repodata/repomd.xml from core: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from core: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
Many thanks and best wishes, GT.

I am curious, try
"yum --disablerepo=core update"
What else does 'yum' show?
Have you tried yumex or gnome-yum or smart-gui?
Take a look at this link, maybe it will help, do a find on " --disable " and it will take you to the spot.

Hi Andrew,
Many thanks! The following is what I get:
#yum --disablerepo=core --disablerepo=dries update Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: dag failure: repodata/repomd.xml from dag: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from dag: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
So, I go on disabling one after the other and finally issue the following:
# yum --disablerepo=core --disablerepo=dries --disablerepo=dag --disablerepo=freshrpms update Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories http://ftp.chg.ru/pub/Linux/fedora/linux/extras/4/i386/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (97, 'Address family not supported by protocol')> Trying other mirror. http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/fedora/linux/extras/4/i386/repodata/repom...: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (97, 'Address family not supported by protocol')> Trying other mirror. extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/4/i386/updates/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (113, 'No route to host')> Trying other mirror. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: updates failure: repodata/repomd.xml from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
I wonder what the No route to host means.
But this one works, well sort of (after lots of similar error messages as above):
# yum --disablerepo=core --disablerepo=dries --disablerepo=dag --disablerepo=freshrpms --disablerepo=updates update
Do I need to do anything now to make sure the automatic yum also updates?
Many thanks and best wishes, GT
PS: Wonder the problem with gaim. It is interesting to note that Yahoo! Messenger works fine, as does using gaim on Yahoo! just after using ymessenger, but gaim never works for me with hotmail MSN or AOL's aim. It used to work just fine two weeks ago, with the old modem.
Many thanks again! GT

It can't make a connection between you and it, for some reason.

Does MSN work using something else other than your current system?
On my ISP (Optus) we frequently find that some things don't work for two common reasons: They have a crap DNS server, and you don't get name resolution. Their network breaks down, and loses connection between some things (e.g. the overseas link to wherever MSN messenger's servers are).

Hi,
Everything works fine with a separate box on a T1 connection. I think there maybe some setting on the modem which is creating this problem?
Best wishes!
