Hi, I downloaded xine player. It works fine with VCD but says error when DVD is played(something like drive not found). My DVD drive is actually a combo drive(CD-R,RW,ROM,DVD-ROM). My combo drive is LG-GCC-4521B. It is able to show the contents of the dvd. There was no /dev/dvd file in the /dev. The combo drive is indicated by cd-rom1. I hav another cd-rom drive which is shown as cd-rom. The combo drive is shown as /dev/hdc. how to play dvd with xine.
Thank you,
with regards, ashwin

This should work:
xine dvd:/dev/cdrom1
xine's DVD button will not work as it only looks for the first drive I think.

Create the /dev/dvd symlink: ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd
I have a LG-4120B combo drive and it works fine with Xine.

Playing dvds with xine works fine for me, but I had to go find and install the following RPMs to achieve that:
libdvdread-0.9.4-fr3 libdvdplay-1.0.1-fr2 libdvdnav-0.1.9-1.fr libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.fr
Get this message on installation:
"Unable to align partition properly. This probably means that another partition tool generated an incorrect partition table, because it doesn't have the correct bios geometry. It is safe to ignore, but ignoring may cause (fixable) problems with some boot loaders."
Well, what do you know, I seem to have one of those "fixable" problems. Computer hangs on reboot most of the time.
1) I installed redhat 9 on this hard drive before installing Fedora. Might that be the cause of the problem?
2) How do I fix this? I am not a programmer, so go easy.
Any help much appreciated.

I was having trouble with a dual boot problem in FC2 and someone on the list said Fedora reported the geometry of the drive wrong to windows. I don't know if this bug was ever fixed. This may be a place to look. And no, I'm not a programmer ether, those guys make it sound so simple. " Just do X Y Z see it's so simple " :-)

If you were bitten by the dual boot (w/ XP) bug try here for the fix:

No, I have no trouble booting into windows. My problem is boot fails in Linux, after a few times or if the system shuts down uncleanly. I have a feeling it has to do with error msg. above.

Also, when you run Xine, go into setup, then into the INPUT tab, and change all references of /dev/cdrom,/dev/dvd to /dev/cdrom1. That way Xine will only allow DVD 's from that drive. That also worked for me.
