Howdy All -
I remember some time ago someone used to post monthly statistics about this list. Things like who posted the most messages, how many threads, how many posts, which threads were largest, etc.
Is that information still available anywhere? I know I can look at the archive and figure it out myself, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I can avoid it.
Thanks! Thomas

Noone is doing that anymore AFAIK. I found it useful when it happened long back. If you are interested, go ahead and share the scripts when you do.

Have a peek at http://www.camerontech.com/fedora-list-stats/ to see if this is helpful.
Some folks mailers do some ugly things and they show up in the bottom of the list with all kinds of weird special characters.
But this is just my first run, the script certainly needs a lot of tweaking.

Thanks for doing this. Show serial numbers as ranking on the first column. Show names. If you are posting email address, don't make them spam baits. Publish the script as early as possible since others might have code suggestions. If you are interested in associating a list digest etc, take a look at the code published in

Not sure what you mean by this. Serial numbers? Do you mean you just want the people ranked?
Show names.
Ugh. You should see how many retarded ways the e-mail addresses show up in the From: field. I had to scratch the noggin for quite a while to get it as clean as it is, and it ain't too clean!

Was actually going to set this up to run as a cron job to mail it to this list every {day|week|month} or whatever makes sense. As far as the list members e-mail addresses being spammed, well, the reality is that every e-mail address is publicly available at https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and it is not login protected.
Publish the script as early as possible since others might have code suggestions.
Heh - that presupposes I'm not too embarrassed by my weak-assed scriptification skills to post it.
OK, it's at http://www.camerontech.com/fedora-list-stats/fedora-list-stats
Argh, I know I am going to be roundly embarrassed by this lame script.
If you are interested in associating a list digest etc, take a look at the code published in
Thanks.

That was quick. I agree with Rahul. You'll want to do something with the email addresses. Otherwise it's a heck of convenient spam list.

I don't disagree, but the addresses are already at https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/
The chances of someone harvesting them from my dinky little home site are astronomically lower than from the Fedora list archives.
Also, they won't live there forever, I am just sort of goofing around to try to come up with something. Once it's done I think it makes more sense to send them to the list and not post them somewhere.

Interesting to see how few there are ranked 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15... Now isn't that odd? :-)
Pardon my ignorance, are the stats of any particular use as far as the list/archives is concerned?

Not yet. The first column is supposed to be rank, and that part's busted right now so it's blank.
The second columns is the number of posts.
Third is the poster.
It's going to get fixed but I'm home from the road, the kids are home from school, it's Friday night and I'm heading out to the grill for a while to do up a big family dinner.

The list is clearly wrong. I have been falling behind and placing me as 5th on the list is clearly not correct.

Um, I'm seriously starting to get that old "no good deed goes unpunished" feeling here.
Patches accepted. I am a horribly rusty scripter, and the script is at http://www.camerontech.com/fedora-list-stats/fedora-list-stats - ripe for improvements.
I don't think it's wrong, Aaron. Look at the way it counts and you'll probably see that it's pretty plain Jane.

One quick improvement - grep for "^From:" instead of "^From". You cut the matches in half.

We're being data mined now too? Are we going to have eventual grading of our questions/answers? Will we get negative points for top posting or html posting? What lessons will we learn? :-)

Being punished for top posting is a good idea actually. :)

Helluva job, Thomas. <pat on the back> About email addresses, just google and we all show up, email addresses and all, listed in the search results. So, I'm not losing any sleep. Again, nice job and thank you for volunteering. Oh yeah, about that check I was gonna send you for putting my name at the top of the list? I'm a little short right now... <chuckles> Ric

I think it's a case of not handing them out on a plate. Spammers are quite likely to go prowling for list statistics, and similarly identified pages, as a ready-made list of addresses all in one hit.
