Yep, I use Thunderbird with my gmail accounts. The
problem with yahoo is
that it doesn't have IMAP so:
- you have to download the messages.
- they (AFAIK) become unavailable in the web
interface.
So for my yahoo mail I use the web interface. The good thing about yahoo is its disposable
addresses.
It has a 'new' mail interface (available since some
time already) and
maybe it's friendlier but I'm sticking with the
classic.
If Yahoo supports POP, make sure you have the "Leave messages on server" option set in the "Server Options" part of your account setup on Thunderbird. It'll download the messages but leave them on the Yahoo server. I think they even still show up as "Unread" (at least they do on RoadRunner's servers).
Thanks, I'll check that.

Yahoo does have IMAP on the free service. Here are the parameters to set it up:
http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?locale=en_US&page=content&y=PROD_MAIL...
If you don't get prompted for a password when you connect, make sure that no other programs (or any computers on your NAT'd LAN, I suspect) are signed in to the Yahoo account you're trying to access.

Hey, thanks for that! Indeed Thunderbird sets it up automatically. We only have to choose the folders to subscribe in 'Manage folder subscriptions'. So I can see all messages.
Now, it will only set up the main address for outgoing messages so in my case I would probably need to add an account for each disposable address I have if I want to be able to reply. Unless Thunderbird has some type of alias settings (defining a list of addresses to use with the same settings for all). If it hasn't maybe I'll open a feature request for that in Mozilla's bugzilla.

Actually it can be done from 'Account Settings...' > 'Manage Identities'.
Writing from Thunderbird right now.
