I had working sound in Fedora 14, but now since upgrading to Fedora 15, there is no sound. What gives??? The ONLY option in systemsettings for sound is Pulseaudio. XMMS has options for OSS, ArtsD, and Alsa. Are those deprecated or something??? any idea why I can't get sound any more???

FYI, I did finally manage to find the KDE mixer and run it. I found that the "master" was muted as was the PCM as well. However, even after unmuting it, I still can't get any audio. I tried the suggestions on the Fedora project page, but that didn't help either. I found several entries in alsa.org about the same hardware, all using the same script, but I can't find a single article about changes needed to get it to work.
As I say it *used* to work, but now it doesn't, and the ONLY change has been from F14 to F15. NO hardware changes of any sort have been made!
Here's the information from the "also-info.sh" script:

I didn't see any "!!Modprobe options (Sound related)" in your output. I assume Fedora 15 still needs modprobe options for sound.
I have sound options in my Fedora 14 /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf file. ...skip options not related to sound... options snd cards_limit=8 alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel index=0 alias snd-card-7 snd-usb-audio options snd-usb-audio index=7

As far as xmms is concerned, you probably want to "yum install xmms-pulse". Afterwards go to the preferences and make sure that the pulse output is default and active.

Ok... I put the info you had in your local.conf file WRT audio, except for the USB as I don't have any USB audio. I'm tempted to put an old PCI sound card in to see if that might help things, but I don't really want to. I want to figure out what is going on with sound and why it doesn't work now, but it did before I upgraded to F15!

Do you, by chance, know what you had in your /etc/modprobe.d/ files, related to sound, on Fedora 14?
If I do a google search, options snd_hda_intel model it appears snd_hda_intel has other options.
My modprobe options might not be enough, or even correct for your hardware.

Not a clue what I had previously. All I know is it magically worked up until I upgraded. I have since checked the obvious -- making sure speakers are powered up and plugged into the outlet... It appears that just about everything uses "snd_hda_intel" even though it's actually nVidia hardware.
Ok... I posted on another list and was prompted to take a second look at the mixer. I had only un-muted the "hardware". I took a second look and selected the "internal playback" and it, too, was muted.
Might I suggest whoever had the bright idea to mute all channels on an upgrade was an idiot!

And might I suggest that if that were the default, we'd be flooded by complaints about it? Why does everybody on this list seem to assume that if something goes wrong for them on the upgrade it's the fault of whoever built the upgrade? Why are you so eager to blame the devs for minor glitches on your box that nobody else is reporting?

I found I had to
(a) install and use pavucontrol so I could make pulseaudio send stuff to the right places ("everyone" has two soundcards these days as there's the HDMI audio in your graphics card which probably isn't connected to anything unless it is - basically you can't get this right any more and there needs to be an extra configuration step).
(b) play with (in my case) "alsamixer -c 0" to fix up my mixers and stuff. Pulse doesn't seem to like independent headphones - if I turn that on no amount of messing about will get me any sound.
(c) Manually save the ALSA state with alsactl and put something in rc.local to reload it because F15 no longer gets this right, and otherwise I have to do (b) again every time I reboot.

I found that upgrading to Fedora 15 had caused *all* inputs to be muted as well as the outputs. I had to go and un-mute everything. Bloody idiots, IMNSHO, who decided to mute everything on an upgrade!

Well, that's a better direction than the time I had to replace all the glass in my house because it was shattered when a new release set the volume to max and played the gnome startup sound :-).

Does your computer really need amplifiers and speakers big enough to do that?

Why reset *anything*??? Why not keep the existing settings??? If I'm having to fsck around with the speakers and volume settings, if I accidentally manage to figure out what the hell is causing me NOT to have any sound, I'm likely to blow my eardrums at the least!
