Last time I tried installing http://claws.sylpheed.org/downloads.php from the devel yum repo, it screwed up X windows.
I've downloaded the RPM from http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/development/i386/ and plan to do a local install via yum of this RPM. Is this the safest way to install risky packages?
thanks,
Thufir

Well, what do you call 'risky' packages? FYI, Sylpheed-Claws is not known to be unstable, whatever you install it from the FC packages or from the sources.
More about your concern:
- what Fedora Core is yours?
- what did you install actually from claws.sylpheed.org? 'cause the download pages points to the FC5 extras RPMs as well as to some unofficial ones. Knowing the extra location and package name would help.
- how did you crash Sylpheed-Claws, just starting it?

IIRC X Windows wouldn't start, which I attributed to installing sylpheed-claws. Even after using Yum to remove X Windows, then re-installing, X Windows failed to install via yum. Presumably Sylpheed-claws worked fine, but some weirdness with X Windows there.
Wheras, using the GUI, it went smoothly. ?
thanks,

That can't be related.

Did you finally get rid of your problems? Tried Sylpheed-Claws again?

Pardon the delay in responding! Yes, sylpheed claws works fine, but I prefer, so far, to use pan for nntp (like this list/group).

Hehe no problem, my own reply came nearly one month after your previous one.
Yes, sylpheed claws works fine, but I prefer, so far, to use pan for nntp (like this list/group).
I see. Is that because you were used to pan before trying Sylpheed-Claws? Otherwise, would you detail a bit more your comparison of both products with regards to NNTP features? Do you use Sylpheed-Claws of email like POP or IMAP?

I keep meaning to set up POP3 for my gmail accounts, but worry about mixing up my public spamtrap (this address) with my real, private, address. So, I haven't done that, yet. In the past, I did have pine configured for POP3 with gmail, and still have that settings file. Again, it's the switching roles/addresses which hinders my adoption of that feature--the potential for human error, on my end, seems large.
In terms of Pan, I like the tabbed browsing feature, wheras sylpheed-claws seemed (?) to only offer panes.

Well, IMO there's nothing to say to this, as everyone knows better than others what better fits one's needs. Also, if you can make all you spam to be managed on a distant server (gmail or other), it's better (than retrieving it and filtering locally).

Yes you're right, it's not a feature implemented for now.
