Old Crystal Sound with FC2?

I have a ThinkPad 600, with some old Crystal sound.  FC1's version of 
sndconfig picked it up just fine.  system-config-sound reports no 
soundcards detected.  I installed the old FC1 sndconfig rpm, but the 
driver model seems to have changed ;-)

Any hints?

    I've had the same problem with an old Aptiva SE7 with the CS4232 
chip.  For one thing, support for the CS4232 (and from browsing the 
/lib/modules hierarchy, a number of other legacy chips) was not 
configured in the default kernel.  I'm told that building a custom 
kernel with support for the CS4232 would go a long way toward fixing the 
problem.  Whether that's all that would be required, I don't know, being 
something of a newbie myself.  In any case, on the other side of my home 
office I have a much newer box (NetVista A60) dual booting Win2K and 
SuSE 9.1 Pro.  The newer sound chip was recognized and works fine in 
both OS's, so there's no great incentive for ME to try rebuilding the 
kernel, except as an exercise.  If you DO try it, please post the 
results here;  it might be just the incentive I need.  ;-{)>

I'm pretty sure that the modules I need are lying around in 
/lib/modules/...  I just can't get them to load, even when I specify 
what I am pretty sure are the correct parameters.  Honestly I'd like the 
configuration tool to Just Work.

    In the month since this thread was last active, there have been a 
couple of threads related to CS43xx sound chips.  After having tryed all 
the suggestions, the closest I got to sound was a message that module 
CS4232.ko could not be loaded.  I haven't been moved to try building a 
custom kernel yet, but I'm confident that if I did, I'd find that 
support for CS4232 sound had not been generated in the default kernels.

Have you tried modprobing the cs46xx module?  That module probes for me,
but I still cannot get any sound out of my 600E.

FWIW I have sound working fine on my 600E for a very long
time. Curently I have Rawhide running - and it still works..

I used those exact lines in my modprobe.conf file, and I get this:

Aug 30 12:52:03 600E modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting snd_cs4236
(/lib/modules/2.6.6-1.435.2.3/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4236.ko): No
such device
Aug 30 12:52:03 600E modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for
sound_slot_0
Aug 30 12:52:03 600E kernel: CS4236+ soundcard not found or device busy

Whereas `modprobe snd-cs46xx` will actually insert the module.  I tried
similar settings for a cs4232, with the same result (No such device).

Any other ideas?

One sugestion I've seen was swapping values for 'dma1=1
dma2=0'. 

Beyond that - playing with some bios settings with PS2.exe tool might
help - which I've never done (its constantly refered to in
linux-thinkpad mailing lists archives).

Yeah, I tried that because I've had to do that before.  It's weird that
I can modprobe cs46xx but not any of the cs43xx modules.

If you remove the snd-cs4236 modules, can you modprobe snd-cs46xx?

Hmm. there are some errors in the log - but I'm able to play an mp3
file. (after unmuting in alsamixer, cranking up voulme controls in
gnome-volume-control)

Interesting.  I cannot even bring up alsamixer or gnome-volume-control. 
I am going to try a newer kernel to see if that changes anything.
