Is there an app that will convert MP3 files to Ogg?

There are numerous such scripts I believe. Google for some options. One that I found just by guessing is mp32ogg.
Beware that such a conversion will be lower quality than converting from wav (or some other lossless format) to ogg. If you have the original sources and care about audio quality, you should reconvert them from that source rather than from the mp3 files.

Understood - I tried mp32ogg but it complained about not having the perl-base.
I have converted my CD's to ogg and you are correct, with the very few MP3 files I do have, there is a huge sound diff.

That sounds like a packaging issue. Did you try installing it from some other distro's package or something? Or perhaps we're not talking about the same mp32ogg? I'm referring to
ftp://ftp.faceprint.com/pub/software/scripts/mp32ogg
I've never used the script myself, but it looks like the required perl modules for it are all in Fedora. You'd just need mpg123 from somewhere else.

Indeed Todd, we are talking of the same script. Here's a small snippet of the errors:
Can't locate MP3/Info.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.7/i386-linux-thread-multi Etc, etc, etc.
It's Ok though, I figure I may just need some other missing perl modules. For the dozen or so MP3's I do have, it's really not worth going through any extra effort.

You're probably right, but for completeness, here's how to get the modules you need:
yum install 'perl(MP3::Info)' 'perl(String::ShellQuote)'
You can install mpg123 from Livna or another repository that provides non-free or patent encumbered software.

Thanks for the help Todd.

This won't help if you're a Gnome user, but there's a Konqueror plugin at kde-apps.org called AudioKonverter which does music file conversions; I use it to do MP3 to Ogg conversions and Ogg to MP3 conversions. I wanted to package it up for Fedora, but it relies on programs that aren't allowed in the main repository (like LAME).

Kelly -
Thanks for the reply and the heads-up. You are correct though, I am a Gnome user. I used KDE early on in my FreeBSD days...
Funny how I actually started using Gnome as my first WM, KDE after, then spend a heck of allot of time using XFC4.
Since moving from FreeBSD (and a nice gradual move to Linux via Ubuntu) I have pretty much come full circle under FC with Gnome
*Sigh* I digress, sorry.

Can you not submit it to one of the other commonly used repos, then?
Hi,
Take a look at transcode - Its a CLI application for converting audio(and video) between different formats. I believe there are also GUIs frontends for it (KDE transkode), if you are into that sort of thing.
As a previous poster said, its always best to try and rip from an original lossless format, but on the odd occasion I needed to do this, transcode worked quite well.
cheers Chris

It can be done Chris, but please be aware that sonicly, the results will do little but insult your eardrums. Each method throws away different bits and pieces, and when you go from one that's missing this, to the other that's missing that, with both bits missing in the final, the result is pretty ugly.
I personally much prefer the ogg sound myself, but if you need them in ogg at usable quality, then just re-rip them. The difference between the 1st generation of each then is very obvious, even to these 72 year old ears.
I'd use grip for that. With Q7 for a quality setting.

Take a look at this thread: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t55174.html
Look for: ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -acodec vorbis -aq 20 -ar 22050 output.ogg
I've not used it but I've heard good things about it...
