You have to goto rhn.redhat.com and associate your system profile with a given channel (e.g. Red Hat 9)...
Is this Fedora or a RHL release? -Ali

You didn't try and install Ximian Desktop did you? I got that once when I was fooling with it.

Please do not confuse people.
This is the fedora-list, so I guess the OP is using Fedora Core. There is not need to register, visit rhn or something similar in fedora, trying to register will even break the setup.
William already explained what to do, in addition I'd like to recommend Alexanders article @ http://fedoranews.org/contributors/alexander_dalloz/mirror/

Same problem here Mike,
I've updated the sources file to point at a mirror; I've commented out the up2date default line too.
To try and get updates I'm going through the GUI rather than CLI, I have to launch up2date, which takes me to the RedHat Update Agent. Clicking forward brings up the error screen which says "This system may not be updated until it is associated with a channel"
Thanks for the help "so far" guys.

Double check that...

If it still gives you the error, check to make sure the /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date file has "useRhn" set to "no"
Thanks William!

I saw the first instance in sources, which was commented out, assumed that was the only one. Of course, it wasn't, commenting out the second appears to have worked.

Couldn't find that, but it doesn't matter now.
Thanks again.. Ciemon

Comment out the "up2date default" line in your /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources file and don't run rhn_register again. While you are editing the sources file you probably want to set it up to use a mirror.
