I did wonder if this was the cause of the problem, but (1) it didn't happen with the previous Linux configuration I had, and (2) I actually write remounting the filesystem as /home before I wrote to you. But (I now realize) I left /u as a symlink to /home instead of changing my actual home directory, so that didn't cover it.
This still leaves me with two questions.
[1] What about the way the message from SELinux failed to name a directory? That made it impossible for me to see what was actually going on. It seems to me like a bug in the alert reporting.
