Hi,
I am running the RedHat Fedora core 2 on an Athlon computer. The computer ran without any problem since the Fedora core 2 release. Since the following updates, the X windows system freezes after a random amount of time.
Package Installed: kernel 2.6.8-1.521.i686
Package Dependency Installed: kdebase-devel 6:3.2.2-6.FC2.i386 kdelibs-devel 6:3.2.2-8.FC2.i386 samba-common 3.0.7-2.FC2.i386 samba-client 3.0.7-2.FC2.i386
Package Updated: imlib 1:1.9.13-19.i386 lha 1.14i-14.1.i386 kdebase 6:3.2.2-6.FC2.i386 cdda2wav 8:2.01-0.a27.4.FC2.3.i386 cdrecord 8:2.01-0.a27.4.FC2.3.i386 mkisofs 8:2.01-0.a27.4.FC2.3.i386 kdelibs 6:3.2.2-8.FC2.i386 kudzu 1.1.68.2-1.i386 samba 3.0.7-2.FC2.i386
Characteristics: - The X process is running at 99% of CPU. - There is no related lines in log files - It seems to be not dependent on the kernel (I tried under 2.6.7 and 2.6.8). - It appears under Gnome as well as under KDE - It seems independently related to applications I used (Evolution, Emacs, Mozilla, Terminal or ... nothing) - It seems to be not related to the screen saver: it does not matter if it is activated or not.
The only thing I can do is to log in from another computer, kill the X process, go to telinit 3 and then telinit 5. The problem happens about 10 times per day.
If somebody has any idea to solve/find the problem, he is welcome.
Thanks, Christophe
Hi
I'm using mgetty to allow some users access my linux box through a phone line, now I don't want to ask my users to login but always get logged on a specific user account
I want to know if it's possible to configure mgetty to avoid asking for login and password for users trying to connect but instead login automatically as someone defined for every user trying to connect.
Thanks
p.s. I need it for compatibility purposes with client applications already running and not plausible to change it. I will always know previously when a user will try to connect so I can keep all my ports disabled and enable it as needed.
SORRY IF IT'S DOUBLE POSTED, I WASN'T SURE IF IT WAS DELIVERED
Characteristics:
- The X process is running at 99% of CPU.
- There is no related lines in log files
I had a similar issue when using Acrobat5 plugin for mozilla. Once the plugin was launched by clicking on a PDF file, X process went berserk at 99%. Once the PDF file was closed (and the plugin stopped), everything went back to normal.
Then I decided to use ggv for the PDF files. Now something different came up. Once I decided to change some of the preferences in ggv, GConfd went berserk at 80% CPU usage! So I decided to use gv instead and I am happy since then.
The latter might not be related to the former and might not be related to your issues. I am just dropping my 2c here. :-)

If you look in the list archives, you'll see both this post:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-September/msg03414.html
and your original post:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-September/msg03326.html
That's the way to check if your post was delivered, not by double-posting - there is enough traffic on this list without double-posting (and thread hijacking, as you did with your second post).
As for your actual question, have a look at:
http://www.pell.portland.or.us/~orc/Code/plugh/index.asp
That looks quite like what you're trying to do.
Regards, Paul.
Other issues: - the keyboard seems also frozen (Num Lock key does not respond) but when I unplug and plug again the keyboard, the kernel detect the correct keyboard but it seems always frozen. - the mouse pointer is not affected by the problem
I tried to kill all applications one by one but the X process was always at 99%.

I've been running into similar problems since the first kernel update of FC2. I'm still using the "original" FC2 kernel, because the later updates have broken X somehow (I haven't tested the last one yet, though) There's a bug open about this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=125887
It is related to Athlon systems, it is very specific (i.e. it doesn't show up in all configurations -- and I suspect that's why it's still unresolved :( --). Unfortunately, I suppose the information provided in that bug report (and others related to this problem) is not sufficient to solve it. But I haven't been able to provide more specific detail.
Regards,
I cannot suggest you a solution, but just a test to see what's happening. Look at the following quote from a post of mine in a similar thread.
--------------------- Re: Xorg freezes, crashes, locks, shoots and leaves Dear Gene,
I know your problem very well! Anyway, after having X freezing the system for several months, at present it doesn't happen any more. It's hard to say way.
I only can suggest you to add the following lines to xorg.conf:
Section "ServerFlags" Option "AllowDeactivateGrabs" "true" Option "AllowClosedownGrabs" "true" EndSection
They allow you to use C-A-K-* and C-A-K-/ to try to unlock X in some situations (see man xorg.conf for a few detail). To avoid misunderstandings, please note that C-A-K-* means "Control, Alt, Keypad *" pressed together.
This could be a start to investigate what is happening to your system. I would not be very optimistic, but at least you can try, it's very easy. Remember to restart your X server after the changes above.
Best regards... and good luck!!! -------------------------------

And this has what to do with the subject line?

Hello Andrea,
When you gave me the xorg.conf advice for my crashing/locking X I was also hearing my hard drive making strange noises and printing dma errors and getting very hot. Figured that *must* be the problem. Got new drive and managed to salvage my data off old drive before it heated up and reinstalled fc2 from cd. Figured that was my problem. Well it must not have been. Got another X lockup since reinstalling on new hd. Also, have seen one other lockup that is not X I don't think. When shutting down, when it goes back to the text screen and after showing some "shutting down" text in red letters it would lock up there. Would have to hit reset. Saw this with old bad drive and new drive too. Also, system is Athlon. However, have not had X lock with keypad keys enabled as you recommended. Will try it when it occurs. -gene
Hi.. I have configured the syslog on the router to log to my linux box.
I configured on my router logging facility local5 logging 10.1.1.6 logging trap info
on my linux FC2 box add a entry in /etc/syslog.conf local5.* /var/log/routerlog
chmod 777 /var/log/routerlog ps -ef | grep
[root@linux root]# ps -ef | grep syslog root 23547 1 0 Sep21 ? 00:00:00 syslogd -m 0 -r root 3044 29259 0 12:11 pts/3 00:00:00 grep syslog
[root@linux root]# kill -HUP 23547
[root@linux root]# netstat -a | grep syslog udp 0 0 *:syslog *:*
There is still no log, Why ? Any one can point out what is the error? Seems like the router log is not coming in at all :(

Like in a lot of places, try it with no restrictions, then tighten it to get what you want/need. This of course is the case if you _haven't_ restarted syslogd ("service syslogd restart").
Try something like this first, to prove the concept, then tune it down:
*.* / /var/log/routerlog
If you restart it and it starts filling up, then start chosing your keywords. I don't know any off the top of my head, but they're in the kernel documentation, surely.
Just don't forget the restart.
Yes, I tried the following and restart syslogd it does log to the files. But it doesn't collect my router log
*.* / /var/log/routerlog

I had found the problem myself. Thank u very much.. below the file and need to be changed
/etc/sysconfig/syslog to determine the various modes in which it should operate. Syslog will not listen for remote messages unless the SYSLOGD_OPTIONS variable in this file has a r included in it as shown below.
# Options to syslogd
# -m 0 disables 'MARK' messages.
# -r enables logging from remote machines
# -x disables DNS lookups on messages recieved with -r
# See syslogd(8) for more details
SYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-m 0 -r"
# Options to klogd
# -2 prints all kernel oops messages twice; once for klogd to decode, and
# once for processing with 'ksymoops'
# -x disables all klogd processing of oops messages entirely
# See klogd(8) for more details
KLOGD_OPTIONS="-2"

Silly question, but did you insert a firewall rule for iptables that allows the router to connect to the syslog port?
