Hi,
Audacity is unable to play any sort of audio in Fedora 32 on my HP
Notebook.
I installed Audacity from Gnome Software so pretty sure it is a FlatPak.
Whenever I hit the play button I get:
"Error opening sound device.
Try changing the audio host, playback device and the project sample rate."
I did ask the guys over at the Audacity Forums, but they were, lets say,
less than helpful.

The sound devices listed in Audacity are:
* HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 0 (hw:0.3)
* HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 1 (hw:0.7)

* HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 3 (hw:0.9)
* HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 4 (hw:0.10)

So far no other application has given me any issues with sound, Firefox,

Pretty sure it is an RPM unless you have things configured strangely.
It is good to use the rpm from RPMFusion, because then you get the
patented audio and video codecs, so audacity can play audio from videos.

None of these will be efficacious with audacity.

Why is this list different than the devices listed above as available in
audacity? Until the analog card is available in audacity, you will not
be able to play audio there.

This is your problem. Your default device in pulseaudio is number 12,
which corresponds to an hdmi (digital) output. You need your default
device in pulseaudio to be number 0, which corresponds to analog output.
Try this. Open pavucontrol, go to the last tab. Make sure that the
analog device is listed as available there. Then, go to the outputs
tab, and select the analog device, and click the little green checkmark
to set it as the default. If you can't complete these instructions,
return with a description of why. If you can, audacity should now be
able to produce audio. Before you conclude it can't, configure audio
in audacity to use the analog device for both playback and recording.
This should not have been necessary. Device 0 is the usual default for
pulseaudio in the default settings for alsa. Did you do any audio
configuration?

Just went to GNOME Software and searched for Audacity and
installed it. As long as it works fine I really don't care.

But weirdly I have 2 more devices in Audacity that are the 'sysdefault'
and 'default', and these are the ones that work properly.

is a really weird one.
Lets say that you are playing a YouTube video on Firefox, and you pause
the Youtube video in the browser and minimize it.
You now start Audacity and you will find that you can't play any audio
on Audacity until Firefox is closed. 'sysdefault' and 'default' will
have disappeared from Audacity.
What the kind of weird error is this ? I can't use Firefox and Audacity
at the same time ?
Is this a limitation of the Linux Sound subsystem ALSA ?
Does this happen for anyone else ?

I'm still with fc30, and kde. 'System Settings' offers me a virtual
audio device with simultaneous output to the motherboard and nVidia
hardware, and the on-screen audio widget lets me choose. Perhaps fc32
gnome has something similar?

pulseaudio? If one is using alsa directly then the multi input, multi
output benefits of pulseaudio are not available.

In audacity? What if you don't minimize firefox? It could be that
minimizing firefox locks the audio device to firefox, preventing
pulseaudio from using the output device.

No, if you are using pulseaudio in both applications, it is happening
because of pulseaudio. But, this is the whole purpose of pulseaudio.
It allows multiple inputs to be routed to multiple outputs, in various
combinations. If there is not an error in your configuration, then
this could be a bug in pulseaudio. I have to say this seems unlikely,
after all this time that pulseaudio has been in use.
But it could also be an error in the interaction of the desktop you are
using with pulseaudio. It might be that the desktop is not forwarding
pulseaudio requests to minimized applications, so pulseaudio can't
reuse the audio device for a new audio request. In that case it might
be a bug in the desktop.
However, this could be a corner case that is difficult to solve, and
thus a known issue where the solution is 'Don't do that!'.

Works fine for me, which is why I think it is something in your
configuration.
Also, if I use sound as two different users, one switches to another
device because it is locked out of the original device by pulseaudio.
I have also found that if I play sound as the same user in different
applications, they both play at the same time (similar to your use
case). Not much point to having sound from two different sources
playing to a single output unless I'm trying to emulate a cocktail
party or something, but another data point.
If you don't want to continue troubleshooting, open a bugzilla against
pulseaudio, describing the behavior, and how to recreate it. That will
let people more knowledgeable than me look at it.

probably be used as a player. Nonetheless it's not it's main use case,
which could explain the particular problems you're having.

I've no interest in making excuses for Audacity. It has nothing to do
with me. I was merely pointing out that your particular use of it
appears to be unusual. For example you talk about it locking out access
from other software such as Firefox, which is something I would not be
surprised at in an editor which would need exclusive access to the

Yes, audacity offers the ability to set the use of either pulseaudio or
alsa. I have in the past dedicated a device to audacity by turning it
off for pulseaudio in pavucontrol and setting audacity to use it as
alsa. Works great. But mixing alsa and pulseaudio control of a device
is a recipe for problems.

If you are talking in terms of Unix users - then yes. I am the only user
of my laptop.
And I am sure not launching Firefox or Audacity as root, so both are
running as the same user.
What happens if instead of closing firefox, you close the youtube
video?
Ok, here is what happens.
If I pause the video and wait for 30-45 seconds 'sysdefault' reappears
in Audacity and it can function fine. If I start the Youtube video then,
while sound is playing in Audacity, then I guess Firefox does not know
what to do and just stalls the video. Other parts of the browser work
fine, just the video/audio is not played. It is completely halted.
I pause Audacity reload the webpage in Firefox, the video and audio work
fine.
How have you got sound configured to use pulseaudio in firefox?
I have not configured any such thing in Firefox. It came pre-installed
with Fedora and I have been using it as is ever since.

What if you don't minimize firefox? It could be that
minimizing firefox locks the audio device to firefox, preventing

have not done any such configuration. Maybe, the installer detected bad
defaults and configured it improperly.
I have to say this seems unlikely,
after all this time that pulseaudio has been in use.
In that case it might
be a bug in the desktop.
What I am trying to do now is to narrow down the buggy
component and
open a bug report for that.

I am just using whatever defaults were given to me.

Not much point to having sound from two different sources
playing to a single output unless I'm trying to emulate a cocktail

The point is not to have multiple sound sources playing at the same
time, but to have 'sane' behavior.
Its really annoying if I have to close another unrelated application to
use another one. Nevertheless, this is a bug.
I just want to know which component is the culprit.

There is no way to change it in the Audacity GUI.
This may be what is causing the problem since Audacity is trying to use

I see "PulseAudio" as an option in the GUI, so I don't really have a
good answer. You can try filing a bug against the audacity component
to start with. The nice thing about bugs is they can be reassigned to
another component. (In a dream world of unlimited resources, we'd
never ask users to select a component and there would be a team of
people who would handle all of that on behalf of users. Alas!)

I haven't used audacity in a long time, but on my Fedora 32, in Edit ->
Preferences -> Devices, the HOST is set to ALSA and there doesn't seem to
be a way to change it. But Playback Device and Recording Device both have

I believe the reverse is applicable in my case. Audacity I think is
using ALSA directly and not PulseAudio.

is no way to change it in the Audacity GUI.
If you go to edit->preferences it comes up in the devices tab. About a
third of the way down the page is playback device and recording
device. If you click on the selection arrow, you should find default
and pulse, and all your other devices. Mine are set to default, but if
yours is set the same and it still isn't working, then try pulse.
Default selects the default device that is the interface between pulse
and alsa, usually device 0, which in your case is what you want, the
analog hardware. However, given that the default from your initial
data was device 12, default might not work in your case.
Try that, if it still doesn't work, it probably isn't going to be
trivial to get your setup working because there is probably a reason
that device 12 was selected as default instead of device 0. It will
require finding that reason and correcting it, if possible.

Thats interesting, if ALSA is the only option then where does PulseAudio
come in ?
My understanding is that pulseaudio is a sound server, which interacts
with the applications and with the things that directly talk to the
hardware. (See the comment in the text from the audacity tutorial
above; it's not pulse that is the direct interface to the soundcard
driver.) It seems that you have pulseaudio installed. Is it actually
running? What does pavucontrol show?
As I said, I haven't used audacity in a long time and on my system
pulseaudio seems to be running and working just fine. But your
configuration is clearly very different from mine and I don't know enough
to help debug your configuration.

If łukasz' suggestion of installing alsa-plugins-pulseaudio doesn't fix
your problem, can you show your pulseaudio related packages:
rpm -qa | grep -i pulse | less
I think you said you are running kde, so you should have pulseaudio-qt
and kde-settings-pulseaudio, in addition to pulseaudio and
pulseaudio-libs, and now, of course, if it wasn't there before,
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.
I notice that you are using sysdefault instead of default as audacity's
playback device. You want that switched to default since you are the
sole user of sound.
If none of the above has worked, go to this link,

download the alsa-info.sh script, and run it. Then paste the output
somewhere, and provide a link (the output is pretty extensive). I
don't think alsa is the issue, since your devices are showing as
available in both pulseaudio and audacity. But we are out of easy

Early on you were asked to run pavucontrol and bash didn't find it.
Apologies if I missed further mention of pavucontrol, but have you tried
"dnf install pavucontrol"? You also mentioned that audacity might be a
flatpak. In that case there may be a miscommunication between the flatpak
and fedora's audio support.
It is worth looking for reports of linux installs (of any distro) on your
laptop model for discussions of audio problems. I have a desktop that
disables the analog audio output if it is sending audio to HDMI --
unfortunately my monitor has terrible speakers and (unlike TV's) no analog
audio output.

you have a realtek alc3227 sound device, and there are few issues
reported online for that model, all of them superficial. That is, it
works normally for most people.
alsa is correctly configured and working properly.
You have the needed packages installed.
Thus, the issue has to be at the interface between alsa and pulseaudio.
Is card0 the default set in pulseaudio? Use pavucontrol to validate.
Both the setting, and you can play some audio and make sure the meters

Anyway, I've no problem for audacity to play. My system has both

I use the Intel device since I have a good set of speakers connected. The speakers in my

So I am not sure what you want me to do.
You showed the input tab. You want the configuration tab in order to
see what devices pulseaudio recognizes. Whatever is listed as analog
will be the card0 device in alsa, since you only have 1 analog device.
In your case, from your capture, that is 'Built-in Audio Analog
Stereo'. Now you would go to both the input and output device tabs, and
click on the green checkmark to set them as default. But you don't
have to do that, since the pactl output shows they are the default.
Since that is correct, play some audio and look at the playback tab,
and you should see a meter responding to the output from the analog
device. It won't be as sophisticated as Ed's output (at least it isn't
here), that looks like output from audacity.

Well, your system is set up in the same way as mine for alsa and
pulseaudio, and mine works but yours doesn't. So, there is something
else causing the issue. Do you still have the workaround in place to
switch the default video cards? Can you revert that and try again.
The reason this might cause the issue is that video cards have digital
audio, and both alsa and pulse recognize that, and your workaround
could be confusing them, causing issues. No guarantees, but a chance.

Well, I have solved the problem and it seems the solution was simple
enough but subtle.
All I had to do was uninstall Audacity from GNOME Software and then
install it from DNF via:
sudo dnf install -y audacity
GNOME Software installed a Flatpak which does not work perfectly,
whereas DNF installs a RPM along with dependencies like port-audio.
I now have the "pulse" option and can play videos from Youtube and play
audio in Audacity without any problems.
No guarantees, but a chance.
This proves mainly two things:
1) I'm an idiot.
2) Flatpaks are still not a match for native packaged apps. They still
have a lot of subtle problems which crop up for the novice user like me.

I can't see it being your fault that something (flatpak) that touts
itself as being "Create one app and distribute it to the entire Linux
desktop market."
They tried that with Java, it wasn't true. I say the same about
appimages (similar claim from them, doesn't work fully for me, I can't
get MuseScore to print - it attempts, but does nothing). And you've
experienced the same with flatpak (partially working software).
I find it very hard to believe that one compilation will work on all
distros of Linux. You have different system (and support) files, and
filepaths. To even attempt that, you'd have to compile everything into
the application, for one huge executable.
While flatpak likes to claim you avoid lock-in with any particular
vendor, they're clearly trying to do their own lock-in.

Not entirely true. There are some problems which arise specifically
because it's a Flatpak. On the Evolution list we regularly see this
kind of thing, which is caused by the Flatpak sandbox version not fully
communicating with the rest of the DE (i.e. AFAIK it's unaware of the
existing Gnome dbus connections). I don't know if that's the OP's case
specifically, but it does happen. Flatpak is not a substitute for your
local package manager.
