After a week of trying to fix this problem I'm still wondering if anyone managed to get around or fix this sound problem? I have Intel 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 audio controler, which doesn't work under 2.6.10-1.9_FC2.i686 kernel, but works under 2.6.5-1.358/kernel. I have checked the Alsa-mixer, made sure that mute is not checked and volume is all the way up. I've gotten some suggestions but unfortunately didn't help in my case.
Additional info:
/etc/modprobe.conf alias eth0 8139too alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || : remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store

Being a less experienced Linux user, it took me a bit to "understand" the proposed workaround in the Bugzilla. Once I understood what is required, it WORKED on a IBM T42 Thinkpad. (My confusion was think that the "Gnome GUI Alsamixer" was the "thing"; however, it doesn't have the new features.)
Procedure: - Open a command window - Type alsamixer - Use the right arrow to make the "highlighted selection" ( red text under the "bar display" be the "Headphone Jack Sense" (these things are somewhat truncated under the bar displays, so that the "headphone" and "headphone jack sense" bars may read almost the same; however, the "Item" in the upper right corner of the command window spells it out. - At the top of the bar may appear (or not) "MM"; typing an "m" toggles the "MM" on and off. (Confusingly, "MM" equates to "off" and "not MM" equates to "on"; MAKE SURE THE MM APPEARS at the top of the "headphone jack sense" bar - Do the same thing to "line jack sense", found by pressing the right arrow sufficient times; there are more bars than fit in a normal window so it might not appear initially; the additional bars scroll into the window as you move right With the "MM" appearing at the top of both the "headphone jack sense" and the "line jack sense" (meaning I presume that the features are "off" or "disabled", my sound works.

None of these remedies has done a thing for my inspiron 1000. I can play KDE sounds, but kscd is silent reguardless of the kernel
This worked out. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! --- John DeDourek dedourek@unb.ca wrote:

If you can play KDE sounds, then your sound device is configured correctly.
I had the same problem here for a while. I found that I could play a cd using XMMS using digital playback instead of analog. Open the options -> preferences -> input plugins -> cd audio -> configure dialog in XMMS, and select digital extraction. Then select your cd device as the input source.
If it works, then it means that the audio cable from your cd to your sound card/device is incorrectly installed. Sorry I can't help you with this part.
You might try configuring kscd to use the digital cd connection, but when I tried it, it didn't work correctly.
Regards,
John

Hi. Since I have the exact same sound hardware and problem(!) I elected to reply to this thread instead of starting a new one. EXCEPT, in my case sound never worked from the original fc3 kernel install, 2.6.9-1.667, as well as the 2.6.10-1.766_FC3 kernel. I have followed the advice regarding muting the headphone and line jack, but still no go. Although the test program correctly detects the sound device, the test never produced any sound. Also, during boot, when it inits 'audio' a static click comes thru on the speakers, and the log shows [ok], but again in reality no meaningful sound ever came out of this system (under Linux). Here is my modprobe.conf: alias eth0 3c59x alias eth1 dmfe alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 options snd-card-0 index=0 install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || : remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0 alias usb-controller uhci-hcd ------------------ Thank you all. -nat
I also have this same card installed on my Dell Inspiron 5150, and had the same problem on a fresh install of fc3. Make sure that in kmix (or your favorite audio mixer program) with all devices listed that the levels are up for the pcm device. That solved my problem.

The inclination to top post is very easy to understand, particularly if one's email client positions the cursor before text from a prior quoted message. But it is hard to understand why people do so in contradiction of very clear, conspicuous broadcasts of list conventions urging subscribers to place their remarks FOLLOWING the text they are responding to.

List conventions also request that posters trim quoted text to include only that part that establishes context for your reply. Hence there should be *no* quoted text below the last line of any reply. Please note this convention, Mr Curry.
