In FC3, my system-install-packages.desktop file reads:
Exec=/usr/bin/system-install-packages %F
According to freedesktop docs, "%F" expands to a multiple list of filenames. Therefore, if multiple desktop icons are clicked and opened, Gnome should start a single copy of the application, and pass the list of files on the command lines.
Yet, in FC3, clicking on multiple RPM files, and opening them, starts multiple instances of system-install-packages, one instance per file. I haven't upgraded to FC4 yet, but if nautilus still does this in FC4, it needs to be bugzillaed and fixed.

Maybe you were looking at docs on RH systems. There is an active mailing list. SGI (who still support XFS as an open source project) has begun using SUSE on their Itanium machines, so XFS is certainly being used by the people who really need it.
There can be problems with XFS, especially if you get into edgy workloads/hardware configurations, on 32-bit Intel (depending on the devices) with the 4-k stacks on RH. Most people who really need XFS will be using 64-bit processors. Some people have been running XFS on 32-bit hardware in FC[34] without problems, but I suspect they have been lucky with the workloads and hardware.

I'm been following this thread with some interest, now just to contribute a single fact more: end-user i80x86 32-bit system, 7 months fc4 running, 7 months running xfs partitions, but only in the /mnt branch, as huge, extended partitions; p2p and multimedia use, so file sizes are, in general, of hundreds of MB minimum; No one problem there. Great. Efficiency, in two words...

When you boot the Fedora installer, add "xfs" to the list of the parameters at the very first prompt. E.g. "linux text xfs" (or "linux xfs text", can't remember the correct order) for a text-based install that activates XFS.
You can then create XFS partitions with the installer. The XFS utilities will be installed automatically.
It is recommended to use XFS on partitions which contain very large files that are read/written at high speeds. E.g. video capture, MythTV, etc. XFS is the best performer in that case.
I am using it all the time on my 200GB multimedia/MythTV partition with FC4 and works extremely well.
Well, I have installed FC3 that way (XFS on most partitions) and now I regret it. All the time I have a power failure (very rare) or a kernel crash, all the files that were opened O_RDWR contain only zeroes after reboot. And most of the time the Oops points to the xfs driver. :-(
Fortunately JOE and other editors close the backup file after saving. But I had to reinstall several RPMs on such occasions because prelink or ldconfig was running at the time of the crash. I never had such a problem with EXT3 before. I run kernel.org kernels and 2.6.15-rc4-git2 still gives me problems.

Hi,
After upgrading KDE to 3.5, I've been experiencing problems when using removable devices. When a CD or DVD is inserted or when a removable storage device is attached, a dialog appears asking what to do with the newly available media (nothing? play in kaffeine? open in konqueror? , etc.). I'm aware this is a new feature of KDE 3.5 (by the way, is this configurable?). However, no matter what option I select in this dialog, I can't access the device in konqueror using the media:/ URL. The media appears there (or, if it's a CD/DVD, its label is shown), but I get an error message stating that the device is already mounted when I click it. The only way to access CDs, DVDs or removable storage devices in konqueror is by opening /media/device_name. Besides, I have to unmount removable storage devices using the command prompt, because the context menu of its icon at media:/ does not show the option to safely disconnect it. However, if I unplug the device, its icon disappears from media:/, as expected.
Any suggestions on what to do to get my removable devices correctly accessed in media:/ again?
Thanks,
Marcelo

I have a chicken-and-egg problem. My new FC4 system has the 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp kernel which does not have the uli526x.ko driver needed to enable the motherboard's onboard ethernet. So I can't update the system via yum quite yet. I found the driver source needed on the ULI website, and I read the instructions for compiling new modules in the FC4 release notes.
The ULI doocumentation makes me think I need to specifically recompile the kernel to support ULi devices.
However, this module has been in the Fedora kernels since at least the 1637 release. Can I just download a new kernel, install it with 'rpm -ivh', reboot and get my ethernet running. Then I can do a 'yum update' to download/update all the other things.
If this is correct, I'll need just the updated kernel and glibc packages, right? Those will satisfy all the dependencies for the moment?
Or would it be easier to compile the module alone and hope the ULI device requires no other kernel changes?
Thanks

'rpm -ivh' will check for any missing dependencies. If it goes ahead and installs the kernel, you're all set.

Correct. If the new kernel requires a glibc update, install the glibc update with rpm -U, then the new kernel with rpm -i.
Or would it be easier to compile the module alone and hope the ULI device requires no other kernel changes?
Nope, this is much more complicated.

I selected the only available option - "OK" and it exited up2date (it didn't just abort installing that one package). So I tried to run up2date again and it found one new package to download (presumably one that was changed during the 2 hours I had been running the previous up2date). It installed that new package, but didn't continue installing other downloaded packages where it left off. Now I suspect I have a half updated system. Some of the packages that were updated no longer work... for example thunderbird no longer works. How do I recover from this?
Thanks...
DavidPS - It seems like I get errors every few times I run up2date... every 6 months or so they're bad enough that my install is no longer useful. Fortunately that's about how often new releases come out, so I usually just install the new release. But I think it's about time I learn whatever magic is required to overcome up2date problems. Do I just have bad up2date karma or is it as fragile as it seems to me? My computer at work and my computer at home are both currently broken wrt up2date. :(

Error message I get is: The Application "gpilotd" has quit unexpectedly. You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix it. Or you can restart the application right now.
Can anyone tell me what I can do to get this to sync or if it will sync at all? My settings are as follows:

Hi,
I'm running a 3.0Ghz Pentium-D at 3.75Ghz with SMP and x86_64. Runs great except for needing noapic when booting. Otherwise the clocks runs lighting fast. Every thing else is working fine. I'm using kernel 2.6.14-1.1653 that I compile myself to be more optimized and specific to my hardware.
