DVD writer firmware upgrade

I have a Samsung SH-S223B DVD writer and want to upgrade its firmware,
but the firmware upgrade is only provided as an .exe file for W*****s,
which I don't and won't have. Is there a way to install this from Linux?

I've you tried opening the file in file archiver? A lot of them are self
compressed executables but you can sometimes manually extract them, you'll
still need a way to write it though. Another option might be to pull the
drive and borrow a friends Windows system to perform the update :)

I have a similar Samsung DVD burner.  I upgraded my firmware in Windows.  I
could have tried it with WINE, but bricking a perfectly good burner was not
a risk I was willing to take.

Nope, Samsung does the same thing with their SSD drives. You can only
update their firmware from windows as well.

I've seen some stuff about ways to create a Windows live CD or USB,
but never tried it (instead I check before I buy and don't buy any
hardware that requires windows for things like firmware updates :-).

You still have to have a copy of Windows for the live media, but
at least you don't have to install it anywhere.

Samsung may not be supported yet, but there is a Linux tool called
fwupd and the client is fwupdmgr.

For computers with UEFI firmware, the built-in firmware often has a
firmware update specific option and will accept a (hopefully signed
only) payload which you can download from the manufacturer. I know
that the Intel NUC offers this method. Their firmware also offers a
way for the firmware itself to download its own updates, obviating the
need for a USB stick entirely.

For computers with BIOS firmware, the manufacturer should offer a
bootable ISO that you can burn to optical media. Windows was not
required. And Samsung has used this same approach for updating SSD
firmware, where it boots the computer using FreeDOS and then applies
the firmware to the SSD - this was the "Mac OS" compatible download
option, hilariously enough.

I always keep a small USB drive around with it for just such
emergencies.

You would think, of all types of hardware, that a DVD drive could be
self-updating (e.g. insert a burnt disk with update-file, while pressing
a button, so it only does this as a *special* function, and have the
drive do it all by itself).
