Gnome and KDE

Has someone totally revamped KDE and Gnome in Fedora?  It's like some 
icons like Desktop Preferences and other apps are missing.  Plus none of 
the themes from gnome-look.org and kde-look.org work on this distro.

They seem to work fine for me.  Try manually installing the themes
into your ~/.themes directory.  Mind you, I haven't tried KDE.  Don't
even have it installed.

i found icon missing too, but i just got them back from the older fc1,
most of my preferences are the same since i upgraded fc1 to fc2

chroot not working against other distributions

I have some tools on a Debian partition and I used to access them
with a chroot (from a Mandrake partition) but this doesn't work 
from Fedora

Instead I get this message

"Inconsistency detected by ld.so: rtld.c: 1192: dl_main: Assertion
`(void *) ph->p_vaddr == _rtld_local._dl_sysinfo_dso' failed!"

If I try to chroot from Fedora to a Mandrake partition I get a
segmentation fault.

I thought it could be related to ,prelink so I made a
prelink -ua but to avail.

Any clues?

Looks like a difference in the libraries available in the other distro
from the kernel/libraries you are using in fedora.  Since chroot makes
all files outside the current tree unavailable the needed content must
be available in the current tree.

If you are doing 'chroot /mnt/debian-partition' from Fedora and get the
above error, it's something between the Fedora kernel and the Debian
glibc. Pick whichever one is older and blame it. :)

One thing I would try right away would be 'chroot /mnt/debian-partition
/sbin/ldconfig' and seeing if that helped.

I did not fully understand what it internally does, but I suggest you
try again with booting Fedora with follwing kernel parameter: vdso=0.

This solved the problem.

vdso relates to the use of the sysenter instruction in the P4.

I am still a bit intrigued since the kernel doc says nothing
about it: is it for reverting to the interrupt method so
older binaries work with this (fedora) kernel or for forcing
use of sysenter so new binaries work with it.  I googled and
found a message seeming to
point to the later (ie Debian binaries using sysenter) but
AFAIK Debian has tended to lag in the area of autotuning
to the CPU

Anyone knows more about vdso?
