Actually they determine where your ISP connects you to the internet. Thus I am doomed to be shown as living in bloody London.

It's based on your IP, and various databases (some more accurate and/or precise than others). You can use tor (http://www.torproject.org/) and/or a traditional HTTP proxy (http://proxy.org/) to get around this.

Well does not seem to always work. Try it on:128.42.206.11 which is the ip address of Rice U. in Houston. So something is fishy.
