From time to time I get fetchmail problems, and don't understand what the error messages are telling me:
fetchmail -a fetchmail: socket error while fetching from pop3.tiscali.co.uk fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET) fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)
Frequently this is followed by:
fetchmail: another foreground fetchmail is running at 18351.
Is this a Tiscali problem, or is there something I can do about it?

How are you running fetchmail? From cron? If so, how often?
The last error message sounds as though you're trying to run one fetchmail before the previous one has finished. It took me seven minutes today to download all my email, over a 1 Mb/s link to an Athlon 64 3200.
Can you add -vv to your fetchmail command line for a bit, so you get more logging output? That might help you spot the problem.
James.

From cron, on a otherwise-lightly used server box for imap, every 5 minutes. Most of the time it's fine, but sometimes there are a number of these messages created over a period of 10-15 minutes.

I suspect time-outs. Maybe Tiscali are sometimes slow to respond. Would that give the 'socket error' message? I wish I knew what that meant. I'd have a much better idea then of what was happening.
Next time I see a bunch of these coming in I'll try the -vv from a console and see if it tells me any more.

This error only occurs when you have lost Internet connection and the other is because you are now trying to run fetchmail when it is running in background.
Check you Internet connection..nslookup cnn.com to see if it resolves

I'm fairly sure that I have seen it when a browser can still operate. It would have to be a momentary loss, I think. I will check again, next time I get the problem.

If you are using POP3 then you can manually test quite easily.
telnet <hostname> pop3 <wait for prompts> user cannewilson <wait for prompt> pass <your password> <wait for confirmation prompt> list <admire the list of messages> quit
If THAT works then the fetchmail should, too, if you use the right parameters.

Finally it happened while I was actually sitting at my desk. After 2 minutes I still hadn't got a connection, so I guess it's Tiscali that has a problem.

You're not the only one...

Hmm - I keep the Tiscali account for my list traffic, but they do seem to be a little problematic lately. Thanks for the url.
