ntfs-3g

    Someone said to get this software package so I tried yum and it 
doesn't work. I wonder is there another way required?

to this F7 Linux for the first time.

Correction, you do not need the devel files to mount your Windows NTFS
partitions onto your Linux OS. Just the ntfs-3g package (and ofcourse
its associated fuse dependencies) will do the job.

If I recollect correctly, I did not have to install the packages
separately, these were present in the default install (but I might be
mistaken).

You are still mistaken though. Remove the ntfs-3g-devel and the mounts 
would still work fine.

thought you saw.  You remember what you want to remember.

If you don't believe me, do the following:

Look at your yum.log and see when you installed the various ntfs-3g
packages.  I'll bet that ntfs-3g got install when you weren't looking.

You can also list the packages to see which one contain the executable
files necessary to actually mount an ntfs filesystem, and which ones
contain the header files for development work.  Just like Rahul tried to
tell you!  Sheesh!

Note that Karl may be simply laboring under a misconception.  The record
may not be in yum.log.  Also check ~root/install.log.  In my case, it
was installed when I set up the system, not via yum:

[root@bigdog ~]# grep ntfs install.log*
install.log:Installing ntfsprogs - 1.13.1-3.fc6.x86_64
install.log:Installing ntfsprogs - 1.13.1-3.fc6.i386
install.log:Installing ntfs-3g - 2:1.516-1.fc7.x86_64   <<<----
install.log:Installing ntfs-3g - 2:1.516-1.fc7.i386     <<<----

Yes, it's an Opteron and yes, it has 32-bit code on it as well as
64-bit.

Try this:

        $ yum list \*ntfs-3g\*

You will see something like:

        Available Packages
        ntfs-3g.x86_64                           2:1.516-1.fc6          extras
        ntfs-3g-devel.x86_64                     2:1.516-1.fc6          extras

Except in your case they will probably say "installed" in the third
column. People who've been on the list know this because we are aware
that by standard package naming conventions, if "package" provides a
capability then "package-devel" provides header files for programmers to
include that capability in their programs.

This is really how it works, and it's why we all know you are wrong.
ntfs-3g-devel does not provide the ability to mount NTFS partitions,
ntfs-3g does.

Joining the list and being ignorant is one thing; being ignorant while
calling everyone else ignorant is another. On second thought, it's sort
of comical.

Please: Stop, listen, understand, and then speak. Before understanding,
ask.

Nowhere does it say when you installed ntfs-3g.  When *did* you install
ntfs-3g?

No, you are wrong!  You don't understand HOW mounting works on Linux.
You are using BAD scientific method.  You are looking at results instead
of looking at the process.

WHEN you type mount -t nfts ......
(or when you put a line in your /etc/fstab, and run mount -a like is
done in /etc/rc.sysinit when your system boots)

the mount command runs.  It looks at its command line arguments and sees
that you are trying to mount an NFTS filesystem.  mount knows nothing
about how to mount an NTFS filesystem.  It instead invokes *another*
tool to do the work for it.  This tool is called mount.ntfs and it lives
in the /sbin directory.  And it you quesry RPM for it:

	rpm -qf /sbin/mount.ntfs

you'll find that it comes from the ntfs-3g RPM.  *NOT* from the
ntfs-3g-devel RPM.

Karl, the reason it works might be because the base package was
installed when you installed Linux:

installed during system installation are listed in /root/install.log.

Anyway, if you want to list all installed packages, there are a couple of
ways.

% rpm -qa

or

% yum list installed

To search for just a specific package or groups of packages, you could use

% rpm -qa | grep -i package-name

or

% yum list installed | grep -i package-name

To see all packages, installed or not, use

% yum list all

Or, /var/log/rpmpkgs has a listing of all the packages currently
installed, and it's somewhat quicker to get a result than the two ways
above.  Plus, the /root/install.log can only be read by root, and can
include things that have since been uninstalled.  Likewise, neither the
yumlog nor install log would show RPMs installed by directly using the
rpm command.

/me sits back and waits for someone else to come up with yet another
way...  ;-)

Since this is an Extras repository and Fedora 7 has all packages 
combined in one repository, should Extras be disabled or removed. It 
probably is a hangover from FC6.

At least it appears you have the right version installed.
