Hi All,
Fedora 38
Getting ready to upgrade my main computer to FC39, I did hte following commands
# rpm --rebuilddb # rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest # dnf --enablerepo=* update --refresh # reboot and repeat the above update until no updates registered # dnf autoremove
Okay, now both krusader and smplayer seems to have long all their text, except for the first letter and any numbers. Capitol letters seems to come out.
This is krusader: https://imgur.com/acSu6x4.png
How in the world do I fix this?
Many thanks, -T

Probably reboot, or at least logout. A lot of things don't like having libraries and such changed underneath them.

To update your Fedora release from the command-line do:
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
and reboot your computer.
Important: Do not skip this step. System updates are required to receive signing keys of higher-versioned releases, and they often fix problems related to the upgrade process.
Myself, I have found that after reboot, there a always a few stragglers that got missed the first time around.
And it begs the issue, why update your current version if everything is going to be replaced anyway
# dnf autoremove

Three reboots now. No change.

It tells you why right in the "Important:" section. Personally, I don't do a full upgrade. I just make sure that the most important parts of the upgrade process are up-to-date and I've never had a problem.

Then I suggest doing the F39 upgrade now.

Never did upgrade to 39 on this computer. I just started the process.

# dnf install qqc2-desktop-style

Where in the Docs you found you should do that? Specifically -—enablerepo=* ?
Many issues will not arise if you just use the documented procedures. These are tested and work on compliant systems.

Install from scratch and stick to the procedures as documented. Alternatively it may help to install the defective progs, reboot and try to re-install.

This looked suspicious to me, too.

Those are my personal tweaks. ANd I hae a reason for it that I doubt would be useful for the general user

The problem is a user .config issue. I am tracing it down now.

I have no idea. I did say I put some of mu own tweaks into it.

I did a `dnf reinstall krusader smplayer`. Did not help.
If I rename ~/.config it does. So now I have to figure out what in .config is responsible.
Thank you for the help!

Then you get to keep all the broken pieces to play with...
Roasting aside, there are often disabled repos on any system that normally stay disabled unless the user deliberately enabled them. Repos for debugging versions of files, for source RPMs, for testing versions, etc. You just enabled them with a wildcard.
I don't envy your job of unscrambling eggs, now.

In particular, you will have enabled the `-testing` repos if you didn't have those already enabled.

Hi Tim,
Actually, you got me to thinking. There are only three programs I watch on the testing repo: Firefox, Thunderbird, and the bug riddled Wine.
At one time I had qemu-kvm too for some bug fixes, but they are now in the standard repo and the testing qemu is a bit buggy.
So I did a # dnf list installed | grep @updates-testing and found some interesting stuff I thought I had removed. Also there was something weird entangled with two different versions of Wine.
So anything I knew I did not want, I removed. With other things, I dnf downgraded. So I removed `-—enablerepo=*` from my cheat sheet. I thought I had removed abiword years ago and do not remember ever adding goffice. They are gone now. A bunch of others are gone too.
Things went smoothly after that.
I am thinking of doing a full `dnf list installed` and seeing what else I have hanging around that I thought I had removed or do not want anymore.
Thank you!

Good to see that.

I use some software that is distributed as mostly statically compiled binaries and come with source. C++ seems to be dynamically linked. Sometimes I have R packages that came from some github project and aren't in the "official" repos.
After upgrades there are often packages from older Fedora versions and no longer used by Fedora, but may still be used by copr packages or locally compiled stuff. Usually there are "new and improved" replacements available in current Fedora repos. Cleanup involves research to find replacements and often some tweaks to source code. With R, packages now bundle sources for libraries that have been removed from some distro repositories (or the Msys2 system R uses on Windows). There is a growing problem with R and Python users running older distros and getting different results or missing capabilities present in newer distros.

You should be able to adjust things so that those few packages are allowed to update from that repo, and the rest ignored. But a general update ought to update them without a lot of other things coming along for the ride.

I renamed my ~/.config. Then copied the old entries over from it to a new ~/.config about three directories at a time. Each tem firing up smplayer to see if it weirded out. Never did. All fixed now.
