installing Microsoft fonts: chkfontpath not found

Hi everybody,

I've installed Fedora 17 and trying to install Microsoft fonts from
http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/
But I couldn't install *msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch.rpm* file because *
chkfontpath* is missing.

Please help me install them. Thank you

yes, the rpm i've pointed to will do all of that for you.

The spec file is on the sourceforge site (same link), but the spec file no
longer contains the core X and Xft commands.  Those are in a shell script
that comes in the rpm.  You'll find the shell script in the tarball at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mscorefonts2/files/sources/msttcore-font....

So, one _could_ go through all that rigmarole. Or, you could just download
the ttf files and drop them in ~/.fonts in your home directory (create it if
it doesn't exist), and there you are. All done.

It's not system-wide, but arguably that's an advantage -- you can easily
keep it in your personal home directory backups and it's easily preserved
across any reinstalls.

Yep, but I didn't install this new rpm yet. I was trying exactly to figure
what it did that the one I have installed didn't do.

That how-to only asked to run mkfontdir for ttf fonts, not mkfontscale so I didn't run
the latter.

the above?. I´m convinced that Linux needs less ´howtos´ with large
blobs of commands to cut-and-paste into a shell, and more ´howtos
turned into scripts, added to the base system´.

Thanks for that link. xfontsel uses the X core fonts (old system) and it doesn't list
ms fonts (nor xlsfonts does).
I followed the guide and added /usr/share/fonts/msttcore/ to the font path in xset after
creating the fonts.dir etc. but it doesn't make any difference.
I'm using Fedora 17.

But no problem.

don't have it installed so I can't check it.  What version and flavour of
linux are you running?  I tested for this, and the ms core tt fonts showed
up in both Xft and X core lists.

Yep, I use Thunderbird with my gmail accounts. The problem with yahoo is that it
doesn't have IMAP so:
- you have to download the messages.
- they (AFAIK) become unavailable in the web interface.
So for my yahoo mail I use the web interface.
The good thing about yahoo is its disposable addresses.
It has a 'new' mail interface (available since some time already) and maybe
it's friendlier but I'm sticking with the classic.

yahoo web mail and it's definitely not good to follow threads (and since it's POP
I avoid using thunderbird for it).

Try this instead ...

rpm -i
https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/mscorefonts2/rpms/msttcore-font...

This rpm installs the fonts from sourceforge at install time, it does not
contain the fonts.  In addition, it pulls in updated fonts from the EUupdate
font set, and installs the fonts correctly to X core and Xft.

chkfontpath is old.  mkfontscale, mkfontdir, fc-cache are more up to date. 
also, /etc/fonts/conf.d and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.

You need to use all those to add the fonts to Xft and X core.  But that's
all in the above rpm.

you can rebuild it with "rpmbuild -bb msttcorefonts-2.0-1.spec"
from the attached SPEC-file, it will download all needed files
before packaging them

Hi,

This is more than likely a dumb question but I have to ask. I just moved 
from Windows to Fedora a few months ago so I'm a newbie here. My stupid 
question is this, can I use Windows TTF fonts in Fedora? I have  about 
7,000 fonts to choose from on a DVD. Can I just drag and drop a font 
into a font folder like in Windows?

If I can't us them I will install the MS Core fonts this way.

I only install the ones I intend to use. I make
my own anniversary, 
birthday and holiday cards. When I make cards I spend a few hours 
looking through fonts.

Yep - either in with the system fonts or into ~/.fonts.

I would keep it to the ones you use as having 7000 fonts in the gimp font
dialog gets a bit unmanagable.

    cd ~
    mkdir .fonts

Now, you just have to copy the fonts to ~/.fonts (~ is your home directory,
say /home/fred/.fonts)

Any fonts copied there are immediately usable.

I would recommend installing the MS Core fonts anyway if you tend to
use them a lot but that's only a few fonts, no where near 7000.
Additionally I'm not sure you'd want to install all 7000, that could
slow things down a bit.

I would recommend creating a path somewhere similar such as
/usr/share/fonts/myfonts, copy just the fonts you use in there and
follow the howto other than for  #7 I would restart the font server
properly:

service xfs restart

or

systemctl restart xfs.service

depending on what version of Fedora you use...
