I have xine installed along with xine-lib, libdvdcss, libdvdnav (I may not remember the names exactly). Yet I cannot get xine to play dvds. I had xine playing dvds on my laptop at one time but since I re-installed, I can't get it to work with dvds.

Start xine from a command line. Right click on the xine window, which will pop up the Xine control panel if it isn't showing. Click on the "DVD" button to select that source, then click Play. What messages do you get in the command window if it doesn't play? I've got the same software as you do, I think, and can play DVDs with no trouble.

I have had a problem with Xine complaining about the DVD:// MRL, turns out it was looking at the wrong DVD drive. I have noticed that alot of apps need a little config with the location of the cd/dvd drives, particuarly if you have 2 of them as I do. Also watch out for the new mount points /media/cdrom /media/cdwriter etc.
I have also reloaded xine from xine web site : xine-ui-0.99.3cvs-041223 libxine1-1_cvs-041223
This build works alot better.
but also have all of these loaded for dvd tools :
libdvdcss-1.2.8-4.1.fc3.rf libdvdnav-0.1.10-2.1.fc3.rf libdvdplay-devel-1.0.1-4.1.fc3.rf dvdauthor-0.6.10-1.1.fc3.rf libdvdplay-1.0.1-4.1.fc3.rf libdvdcss-devel-1.2.8-4.1.fc3.rf streamdvd-0.4-1.1.fc3.rf libdvdread-devel-0.9.4-5.1.fc3.rf lxdvdrip-1.40-1.1.fc3.rf dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8-2 libdvdnav-devel-0.1.10-2.1.fc3.rf libdvdread-0.9.4-5.1.fc3.rf gstreamer-plugins-extra-dvd-0.8.6-0.1.fc3.fr dvdbackup-0.1.1-1.1.fc3.rf
I use the apt-get from the /dag.wieers.com/ web site to get this lot,
