(f26; Gnome) This past spring, with a lot of help from this list, I replaced the dying
hard drive on my home workstation. But when I use the "disks" tool to check the
health of the new hard drive, smartmontools continues to report test data from the old
drive. I've looked at the smartmontools web site, but I don't see a way of
telling smartmontools to update itself to the new drive. I'm a home user with no real
sys.admin., OS, or hardware training. So please spell it out clearly, in detail:
How do I make smartmontools (and the disks tool) aware of the hard drive replacement and
monitor the new hard drive properly?

So, if you run
smartctl -a /dev/sd[disk letter]
as root you get output from a non-existent disk? That doesn't make
sense. I don't find a program on my system called disks, and the
smartmontools package definitely has no program called disks.
Step 1.
Run df
Step 2.
find the device that you want to monitor, /dev/sd?
Step 3.
As root, run
smartctl -a /dev/sd?

smartctl is at least in part simply re-displaying results from the last run I did on the
old drive last June.
Also, the output is basically the same whether the smartctl parameter is "sda",

Well, the format should be the same, but surely if the drive was
failing the overall result wasn't Passed? In reading the -A option of
man smartctl, I see from the results you got that your drive is in
excellent shape. It is no where near failure.
Also, the output is basically the same whether the smartctl
parameter
is "sda", "sda3", or "sd?".
They are all defaulting to /dev/sda since it is the only disk on your
system. A question mark means an undefined single character, not a
literal question mark. In this case it is a. Things in brackets are
not meant to be literal either, but replaced by what is defined in the
brackets.
The "Disks" I was referring to is what Samuel identified.
I've never used it, so can provide no help.

And if you look at the label of your hard drive, you'll find that data
printed on it somewhere. Conversely, if it's difficult to access the
label on your new drive, look at your old removed drive, and see that
it's different.

It'll just be similar. I seriously doubt that SMART can show cached
data, somehow. I've only ever seen it produce data that's come *from*
a drive, there and then. Try asking it to poll a non-existent hard
drive (e.g. sdb), and you'll see what happens.
There can be a lot of scary looking numbers in the data, and you can
also get a bad new drive. If you have bad cooling, that's bad for
drives. If your cabling is mangled, that can produce data errors (SATA
cabling should never be folded or kinked, if you need to get it out of
the way of things, use gentle loops).

Shows the drive has been on for 2,614 hours. That would be 109 days,
if it had been left on permanently. If your computer is only on a
fraction of the day, do a bit of math to see if it fits your
expectation.

SMART data is for the whole drive.

Do you have a copy of what it was showing last time? smartctl doesn't
save the data anywhere, so there's no way it can be showing old data.

Almost certainly a Seagate disk drive. Do a Google search for "Seagate error
rate". Those are _not_ simple error counts.
