I have FC2 (with all updates) installed on an Inspiron 8600. The machine works fine when plugged into the mains but will not boot when running on betteries. It gets to 'Setting up local disks' and hangs. Does anyone know how I can solve this?
Cheers. Dave.

How old is the battery? Since it boots fine when using AC power and does not when using battery it sounds like the battery may not have enough current to spin up the disk drives.
Dave,
Check the BIOS settings on Power Management. The Inspiron 8600 has Intel Speedstep Technology enabled by default. That means that on battery power the processor runs at half speed. Try setting the bios to leave the processor at full speed on battery and see how that goes.
Best,
Steve

Steve,
Cheers, disabling Speedstep sorted it out. Will this adversly affect my battery life?

Disabling Speedstep will have the effect, that your laptop will run shorter if on battery, as the CPU speed will not automatically decrease it's frequency when not needed to run at full speed.

Dave,
Yes, disabling Speedstep will shorten your battery life by 40%-50%.

I have done a bit of testing with Speedstep turned off and on (both on mains supply). The performance of the laptop appears to be significantly reduced with Speedstep turned off. The application I work on compiles in 11 seconds with Speedstep turned on and 30 seconds with it turned off! From the comments provided I wasn't really expecting this. Any ideas?

I've worked out why FC2 won't boot while my laptop is running on battery. It appears it will boot if a CD/DVD is in the DVD drive, but won't boot if the drive is empty!! Anyone have any ideas on this?
Dave.
